Carbon residents may now register for Carbon County Recreation’s spring sports programs. In addition to normal spring activities such as soccer, tennis, rock climbing and kayaking, a new co-ed adult basketball program will be offered by CCR.
The new program will incorporate men and women playing organized basketball together. There will be some rule variations including the requirement that a team include at least two women in the lineup at all times. Teams may play with more women than men, but never less than two.
Men are not allowed to block a woman’s shot. A man may not attempt to steal the ball away from a woman while she is dribbling, although it is okay to pick off an arrant pass that was thrown by a woman.
Women also cannot be double teamed by either sex.
“These rule adaptations were derived with the help of the College of Eastern Utah’s intramural staff,” commented Frank Ori, assistant director of CCR. “They are there to help the women compete, although there are some women who have the skills to really take advantage of these rule changes.”
The league will begin in mid-March. The deadline for registration is March 12.
Soccer sign ups have also begun. Soccer leagues will begin in early April, but the deadline to register is March 11. There are leagues for K-1st, 2nd-3rd and 4th- 6th. Play will be on Tuesdays and Thursdays at Castle Heights Elementary.
CCR will also offer its annual soccer mini camp for kindergarten and first grade students. Each participant will receive a t-shirt and three weeks of instruction right after school.
Classes will take place once a week at each child’s elementary school location, with Mondays at Sally Mauro, Tuesdays at Wellington, Wednesdays at Castle Heights and Thursdays at Creekview.
Each school must have at least 10 registered participants for CCR to host the program. Mini camps will begin the week of March 15.
Finally, youth volleyball will again be offered this spring. CCR will offer a girls volleyball clinic and league. Former CEU setter Emilee Madsen and other CEU volleyball players will instruct the league and clinic.
League play will be Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning March 15 at 3:30 p.m. at Mont Harmon Jr. High.
Deadline for registration is March 4. For more information, call 637-5092.
