Carbon hurler signs with University of Utah

Carbon senior Troy Grundy recently signed with the University of Utah baseball program.
As a pitcher, 6’1″ Grundy received first team all-region and first team all-state honors in both the 2002 and 2003 seasons, averaging over nine strikeouts per game.
He was also named Outstanding Pitcher during the state American Legion tournament.
Grundy said he inherited his pitching skills from his father, Scott, who was also a pitcher.
He added that his parent’s support has made his success possible.
Grundy’s fastball is usually clocked between 90 and 95 mph and he likes to place it all over the plate. He also throws a mean knuckle ball, changeup and curve ball.
Utah head coach Tim Esmay said Grundy will make a great addition to an already strong team.
“Troy is rated one of the top 100 prospects in the country,” he stated. “We look for him to be a big factor since he comes from the same championship program as Brady Martinez.”
Grundy said he hopes to play professionally someday but will focus on academics while attending Utah. He intends to study in the medical field. He currently maintains a 3.0 grade point average.
Grundy was one of five high school standouts to sign letters of intent with University of Utah’s baseball program.
According to Esmay, Grundy’s group is the best, in terms of quantity and quality, that he has ever seen during his eight years with the program.
“The only question about this class is whether we’ll lose them to professional baseball in June,” he commented.
Before leaving for Salt Lake City, however, Grundy will lead Carbon’s team this spring for his final high school season.
