Senior Nikole Larsen strips the ball from a Wendover guard in the final minutes of the matchup. The Vikings lost to the Wildcats, 23-31. |
In the opening region game of the year, Wendover chalked up their first W of the season.
The teams matched up well in the major skill positions from the opening minutes of the game.
However, Wendover’s deeper bench gave the Lady Wildcats an edge over the injury-riddled Vikings, who entered the half down eight.
The Lady Vikings made several runs at Wendover, reducing the score to five with less than three minutes to play. Nikole Larsen and Samantha Madrid forced several turnovers with their aggressive defense.
However, missed foul shots and offensive put-backs kept East Carbon from overtaking the Lady Wildcats.
The final score was 23-31.
Madrid led the team with eight points, despite an ankle injury which previously had her sidelined.
Larson added five points and Donna Turner and Janet Lowe pitched in four each.
The junior varsity squad also lost by eight, with a halfcourt Wildcat basket as the buzzer sounded to end the game.
The East Carbon Vikings fall to 0-4 on the year and 0-1 in region play.
The Lady Vikings will host Tintic tonight at 5:30 p.m. in a region bout.
