Carbon High’s Zack Burdick gains control of his Emery opponent during Saturday’s Carbon Duels match. Burdick was one of several first place finishers representing Carbon’s varsity team. |
Carbon wrestlers defended their home turf last weekend, winning five out of six team matches to take first place in the annual Carbon Duels.
The Dinos opened the tournament with a 69-12 victory over Woods Cross.
However, in the second matchup against Union, Carbon’s lower weight wins were unable to offset losses by an inexperienced upper-weight.
Union scratched out a 40-39 win.
Carbon finished Friday night with a 45-30 win over a tough North Sanpete squad.
On Saturday, Carbon cruised to the title of tournament champion with three wins over area schools. The Dinos defeated Monticello, who had thrashed Union by a 22 point spread, as well as Emery (66-12) and Duchesne (59-18).
Varsity wrestlers Courtney Ivory, Trent Greenhalgh, Zack Burdick, Dustin Howa, Brett Riche and Dallen McFarlane all had first place finishes for the Dinos.
Jesse Blain finished second, Tim Lasslo and Josh Dunn came in third and Nick Nielson, Taylor Dastrup and Nick Deeter placed fourth.
Carbon’s Trent Greenhalgh was named as one of the two tournament Most Valuable Players, along with Monticello’s Tyrel Snyer.
Carbon will have a chance to even the score with Union this week. The Dinos will host a match against the Cougars on Dec. 11.
The varsity match is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m.
