Helper is one of several Carbon County entities being approached to assist in creating a better Geographical Information System.
According to GIS representative Ben Clement, the organization is seeking out a representative from all the local cities to verify collected data and approve changes if discrepancies arise.
The process includes matching building coordinates to correct phone numbers and addresses. The effort is meant to improve emergency response.
“Everything a municipality does is based on an address,” Clement commented.
Mayor Joe Bonnaci indicated a representative from the city will help verify the information.
Councilman Chuck Buchanan said a more organized system will be beneficial to Helper’s emergency departments.
“I think this is going to help Chief Zamantakis and fire rescue,” pointed out Buchanan.
In related council business, several approvals for equipment purchases and hiring employees were given to Helper Police Chief George Zamantakis.
The warranty on the laptops in the city’s patrol cars are nearing expiration. And Zamantakis told the council he believes renewing the warranties will save money.
Purchased three years ago, the computers will be covered by warranties for another three years.
The renewal, approved by the council, will ensure that the police department will not have to purchase new computers in case of a breakdown.
Zamantakis said the warranty will be paid for by funds secured by the police department through a criminal case.
Purchasing of a new patrol vehicle for $10,000 and hiring a police officer were also approved by the council.
Joe Christman will be the newest officer on the Helper force.
“I believe he will be a great addition,” Bonnaci stated. “He is very qualified and knows what he is doing.”
