Ruth Van Wagoner
TAYLORSVILLE – On Sunday morning, Nov. 9, 2003, our beautiful mother, wife, grandma, sister, aunt and friend passed away following a brief illness.
She was the oldest of six children born to Ira and Vivian Wells on June 30, 1928 in Victor. At age 9, her family moved to Wellington, where she made her home for the next 20 years. It was there that she met and fell in love with Robert Cecil Van Wagoner and they were married in the Manti LDS Temple on June 23, 1948. They became the proud parents of six children.
In 1960 they moved their family to Taylorsville, where they lived until they were called to serve an LDS Mission to Kirtland, Ohio in 1994. Ruth had the ability to find happiness even in the most trying of times. She was a person who loved the Lord and kept his commandments faithfully throughout her life. She was a loving wife and outstanding mother who taught her children the value of work and the truthfulness of the gospel. She loved to dance and sing and enjoyed many precious moments with her family. She was an accomplished seamstress and an avid gardener. She had a passion for genealogy work because she was blessed with the ability to remember names and places. She was a woman who knew the true meaning of forgiveness.
Ruth is survived by husband, Robert; children, Gayleen, Deb (Bill) Dalbey, Robyn Koenig, Brent (Debbie), Wells (Eileen), Mari (Bret) Pearce; brothers, Delwin and Vard Wells; sister, Gwenda Arnold; 23 grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
Special thanks to the nursing staff at Heritage Park, Applegate Hospice and Paula Smith for their help in making her last days comfortable.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, 12 noon, at the Taylorsville 16th LDS Ward, 3495 West 4850 South. Friends may call Tuesday, 6 to 8 p.m. at McDougal Funeral Home, 4330 South Redwood Road, and Wednesday at the church, 10:30 to 11:45 a.m. Interment, Redwood Memorial Estates.
Benjamin Poss
WELLINGTON – Benjamin B. Poss passed away Nov. 2, 2003.
Ben was born Dec. 29, 1933 in Atlantic, Ga. to Jesse Gordon and Reba Cook Poss. Married Phyllis Bates April 6, 1963.
Served 10 years with the Air Force in Korea. Ben loved building things, from huge machinery to toys. But his greatest joy came from his grandchildren. He is held dear in the hearts of many loved ones and friends.
Survived by wife, Phyllis L. Poss, Wellington; sons, Gordon (Dawn) Poss, Price; Benjamin B. Poss Jr., Wellington; Wayne (Sherry) Poss, Montrose, Colo.;daughter, Reba (Josh) Frazier, Montrose, Colo.; and 13 grandchildren. Preceded in death by loving son, Jacob Poss.
Memorial service was Saturday, Nov. 8, 1 p.m. at Trinity Christian Center, Price.
Genevieve Preston
SUNNYSIDE – Heavenly Father saw that she was tired and that she needed rest, so He wrapped His loving arms around her, and He took the very best on Nov. 6, 2003, at the home of her daughter in Price. She was born to James Ellis and Leona Crawford Peacock on May 28, 1918 in Sunnyside, where she made her home for 85 years.
Married Thomas (Buster) Preston on Dec. 24, 1935. The marriage was later solemnized in the Provo LDS Temple June 5, 1982. Bus preceded her in death July 6, 1982.
Gen’s life was dedicated to her family. She was a wonderful mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother. She was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The senior citizens center and her remarkable friends brought her great joy. She will be remembered for her cooking, crocheting, embroidery, and quilting.
Genevieve is survived by daughters, Colleen (Robert) Potts, Price; Gaylene (J.B.) Jensen, West Jordan; 10 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. She is also survived by sister, Elma Miller, Jerome, Idaho. Her parents; sister, LaVee Watt; brothers, Ellis Peacock and Marcel Peacock; infant brother and sister, Mary and Dee preceded her in death.
Funeral service was Nov. 10 in the Price 11th LDS Ward. Interment, Price City Cemetery.

Elda Oveson
CLEVELAND – Elda Mills Oveson, age 85, passed away Nov. 8, 2003 in Elmo.
She was born Sept. 16, 1918 in Desert Lake, to David James and Bertha Pearl Wells Mills. She married Alonzo Peter Oveson April 8, 1938 in Huntington, later solemnized in the Manti LDS Temple.
As an active member of the LDS Church she served in numerous callings. During her lifetime she became a skilled homemaker, sewing, cooking, bottling fruits and vegetables from her garden, doing whatever was necessary to make a happy home for the family she loved so dearly. She spent many happy hours in the outdoors with her family, camping, fishing and hunting. She was truly a woman in whom there was no guile.
Elda is survived by children, Johannah and Alan Jensen of Cleveland; Don and Beulah Oveson of Huntington; Dave L. and Margaret Oveson of Tetonia, Idaho; Merrill and Brenda Oveson of Layton; 15 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. Also survived by brothers, Melvin, Dee and Delbert Mills; sisters, Arvella Yergensen, Wilma Hammerschmid and Deloris Marvidakis; stepbrother, Eldwood Baker; and step-sister, Marcella Rhodes. Preceded in death by husband; great-granddaughter, Jaycee Dawn Grange; brothers, Ervin and Merlin; and sister, Vanelda.
Funeral services will be Thursday, Nov. 13, 11 a.m., in the Cleveland LDS Chapel where friends may call one hour prior to services. Fausett Mortuary in Castle Dale will be open from 6 to 8 p.m. for those who wish to sign the register. Burial, Cleveland Cemetery.
Randy Christmas
CASTLE DALE – Randy Evans Christmas, age 39, passed away in Castle Dale on Nov. 4, 2003.
He was born April 19, 1964 in Spanish Fork to Ray Williams and Patricia “Pat” Evans Christmas. He married Denise Nelson Feb. 16, 1985 and later divorced.
Randy loved hunting, fishing and playing sports with his boys. He also enjoyed playing cards with his daughter and cooking. He was a 1982 graduate of Emery High School where he was active in football and track. He served in the United States Navy from 1982-1988 on the C-V 64 USS Ranger. He was a heavy equipment operator for many years.
Randy is survived by children, Tylor, Cyal and Aryal; former wife, Denise Christmas, all of Orangeville; parents, Ray and Pat Christmas of Castle Dale; and grandmother, Ruth Evans of Spanish Fork. Randy is also survived by brother, Chad Christmas of Boise, Idaho; sister, DeAnn Malone of Emeryville, Calif.; and many nieces, nephews and friends who will all miss him dearly.
Funeral services were Saturday, Nov. 8 at Fausett Mortuary in Castle Dale. Interment, Castle Dale Cemetery.
Betty Jones
PRICE – Our beloved Betty Marie Jones, 76, passed away Nov. 6, 2003 in Price.
She was born Jan. 27, 1927 in Tulsa, Okla to Charles E. and Floye Epps Blocker. She married Frederick Maurice Jones Dec. 5, 1950 in Las Cruzas, N.M. and took their family to the Provo LDS Temple on June 26, 2001 to be sealed together for time and eternity.
Betty enjoyed embroidering, dancing, getting dressed up, and going out for dinner. She had been a waitress for many years. Betty loved people and enjoyed spending time at the senior citizens centers playing the tambourine and sharing her love with others. She loved roses and fishing. Her greatest joy was the love she shared with her family. She was a member of the LDS Church.
She is survived by husband, Frederick Maurice Jones of Helper; five sons, Max G. (Crystal) Jones of New Mexico; Charles (Kalynn) Jones of Helper; Robert E. (Deanna) Jones of Oregon; Terry Lynn Jones of Price; and John (Debbie) Jones of Helper. Betty is also survived by 22 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, one great-great-granddaughter; sister, Mary Lu (Bob) Di Carlo of California; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
Funeral services were held at the Elmo LDS Ward Chapel on Monday, Nov. 10. Interment, Elmo Cemetery under the direction of Fausett Mortuary in Price.
Clara Powell
WELLINGTON – Clara Hansen Bogh Powell, age 89, passed away Nov. 5, 2003 at her home surrounded by her family.
She was born June 23, 1914 in Mayfield to Hans Christian and Nellie Mae Lyman Bogh. She married Stanley Elmer Powell Jan. 20 1938 in the Manti LDS Temple.
With her natural music ability and sense of rhythm, she could play almost anything by ear on the piano and organ. Her gifted mind allowed her to do crossword puzzles and word jumbles with ease and was an avid reader. She enjoyed working in her garden and was a wonderful cook. She lived in Price for 61 years and in Wellington for six years.
Clara is survived by children, Calleen P. Claxton of Wellington; Kent S. and Raelene Powell of Paonia, Colo.; Lynnette and Wendell Wakefield of Roswell, N.M.; 13 grandchildren, and 21 great-grandchildren. Also survived by sisters, Amy Gregerson and LaJune Leishman. Preceded in death by husband, Stanley; brothers, Roy, Cleo, Nels, Shirley, Marvin and Clark; and sisters, Nellie May and Alice.
Funeral services were Nov. 7. at Fausett Mortuary in Price. Burial, Price City Cemetery.
Darrell Gross
HELPER – Darrell Gross, age 85, died Nov. 8, 2003 in Price.
He was born Oct. 22, 1918 in Missouri to Wallace and Madge Gross. Married Ann Catherine Plev June 15, 1947 in Ely, Nev. She died July 23, 1976.
Darrell was a longtime resident of Helper where he retired from D&RGW as an engineer. He also served in the United States Army. He loved to fish, hunt and spend time in the outdoors. He will be dearly missed by family and a community of friends.
Survived by son, Joe D. Gross, Helper; grandson, Joseph D. (Roxanna) Gross Jr., Wendover; brother, Donald (Maxine) Gross, Arizona; great-granddaughters, Jennifer Ann and Ashleigh Gross. Darrell was preceded in death by brother, Flim.
Funeral services Wednesday, Nov. 12, 11 a.m., at Mitchell Funeral Home. Family will be at Mitchell’s Wednesday one hour prior to service. Interment, Mountain View Cemetery, Helper.
Harry Elkin
SUNNYSIDE/RATON, N.M. – Harry H. Elkin, Raton, N.M., died Sept. 17, 2003.
He was born Aug. 23, 1928 in Walsenburg, Colo., to Herman and Amanda Linville Elkin. He married Betty Marakis in Price on Sept. 9, 1951. Together they had three children.
He served in the United States Army as a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne Division. He graduated from the University of Utah with a bachelors of science in mining engineering in 1954. He had a long career in coal mining with Kaiser Steel Corporation, working in Sunnyside, Australia and Raton, N.M. Harry was an active member of the Fraternal Organization of Elks, Shriners, Masons and the Society Mining Engineers. Harry had a passion for life, in retirement he and his wife loved to travel visiting numerous foreign countries.
He is survived by wife, Betty; two sons, Harry and wife, Sherri; John and wife, Ailene; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren and many friends. He was preceded in death by parents; and daughter, Gerrie Carol Perry.
