The Seventh District Juvenile Court recognized Tom Matthews at a recent Utah State Restorative Justice conference in Salt Lake City. According to justice officials Matthews has made numerous contributions to the work program. A former Utah legislator and Carbon county commissioner, Matthews retired from the Rio Grande railroad where he worked for 27 years.
In the summer of 2001, while serving as county commissioner, Matthews approached the Seventh District Trial court executive requesting assistance from the work crew with maintenance and weed abatement of some of the old abandoned cemeteries in the county. He provided all the equipment to clear the weeds, brush and debris from the cemetery grounds. He also spent numerous hours assisting the work crew with this task. The restorative justice committee members received many compliments from the community expressing their gratitude and appreciation.
According to Dan Becker, who presented the awards, “Matthews is an excellent role model, teacher and leader to the youth. He is always willing to go the extra mile to ensure our kids find positive pathways toward becoming productive citizens.”
