Junior Jazz registration

By Sun Advocate

Carbon County Recreation is currently taking registrations for youth basketball programs, which begin in December.
Junior Jazz will be a part of the CCR’s winter lineup. There are separate leagues for both boys and girls beginning in the third grade and continuing through 12th grade.
According to Assistant Director Frank Ori, parents should sign their children up as soon as possible.
“Gym space is becoming more and more limited. We find ourselves scheduling and rescheduling time after time with the different schools trying to accommodate as many activities as possible,” Ori commented. “Some leagues can accommodate a limited number of kids due to gymnasium restrictions so sign up today.”
The deadline for registration for children grades third to sixth grade is Nov. 6.
CCR has extended the registration deadline for grades seven to 12 to accommodate children who would like to try out for the junior high and Carbon High basketball teams. The deadline is now Nov. 20.
Volunteer coaches and scorekeepers are also needed for Junior Jazz.
In addition to Junior Jazz, CCR also has basketball programs for younger children beginning in January 2004.
The K-1 instructional basketball program will begin the week of January 12. Children meet once a week after school for one hour to learn the basics of basketball and interaction with other children in an athletic environment.
Sally Mauro will meet on Mondays, Wellington on Tuesdays, Castle Heights on Wednesdays and Creekview on Thursdays. The program lasts six weeks and deadline for registration is January 8.
The second grade instructional program will also begin in early January.
According to Ori, this fun, low-pressure league is meant to prepare a young athlete for Junior Jazz. Children are put into teams and meet once a week for seven weeks on Saturday mornings. Half of the time is dedicated to practice and for the remainder of the time children play an actual game.
This league is designed as a second grade program, but parents who have advanced first graders are encouraged to register them for this program. The registration deadline is January 8.
