North Sanpete defeats Dinos 27-13 in final game

The Carbon football team huddles together to celebrate their 12-6 win over Ogden on Oct. 15.

Carbon High concluded their football season Friday night at North Sanpete in a close game against the Hawks.
North Sanpete scored two touchdowns at the beginning of the game and had a 12-0 advantage on the Dinos by the end of the first quarter.
Although Carbon took the lead back at 13-12, the Hawks were able to hold on and increase their score late in the game.
In one controversial call in the second half, the football was dropped by Carbon when a whistle blew. Hawk players pounced on the ball and it was ruled an fumble.
North Sanpete later scored off the recovery.
Coach Jeff Jorgensen said the team played a good game and it was disappointing that the season was over.
“We’re better than our record,” he said. “This season we played better than I thought we would have but we never did do what we could have.”
Runningback Julian Montoya, who lead the team all season in carries, ran for over 170 yards in the loss.
Carbon is the only region eight team that did not obtain a state berth.
Lehi, Delta and North Sanpete secured their berths early in the season. However, Emery High’s narrow, 14-12 win over Carbon on Oct. 10 eliminated Carbon from any chance at the year end tournament.
Many key players for the team will not be returning next season due to graduation. Jorgensen has also handed down the head coaching position.
Possible experienced players returning for next season include tailback Chris Hatch, quarterback Daniel Davis, fullback Timmy Urbanik and offensive linemen Ryan Leonard and Joe Evans.
The remaining teams in region eight compete in the first round of the state tournament this Friday.
