Points were few and fumbles were many in Friday night’s football game at Carbon High.
The Dinos came out on top of the Wasps, winning 2-0.
“I thought the game should have been 28-0,” Coach Jeff Jorgensen commented. “But when the god of football looks down, all he sees is Ws.”
Fumbles and interceptions riddled both teams in the defensive skirmish, although neither team was able to capitalize on the opponent’s errors.
According to Jorgensen, the offensive line was part of Carbon’s fumbling problem. He said Wasatch rushed the line all game and was able to back the Dinos’ line into the quarterback, leading to two fumbled hand-offs.
“The best way to beat a blitz is to attack it,” he explained. “We just sat back. Wasatch tried to exploit that.”
Offensively, Carbon had a chance to strike first in the second quarter. But a defensive stand by Wasatch prevented a Carbon touchdown and the field goal attempt was missed wide right.
Wasatch also made a drive late in the first half on a Carbon fumble. A hard hit on a completed Carbon pass popped the ball loose and Wasatch recovered. Two long passes put Wasatch within 10 yards of the endzone.
However, the third time did not prove to be the charm for Wasatch. The Dinos’ Chris Hatch intercepted the pass in the endzone, sending both teams into the locker room scoreless.
Dustin Hurst finally broke the scoring drought in the third, sacking Wasatch in its own endzone for a safety and the only score of the game.
Jorgensen said the defense, kicker Blackham and the coverage teams all played well. He also added that he was impressed with the play of Brett Riche.
“He plays pass coverage so well, he’s almost like a third linebacker,” Jorgensen emphasized. “His play is really improving every game.”
Riche also assisted Hurst in bringing down Wasatch for the game-winning safety.
Carbon has a bye this week. Jorgensen said the break will give the team a good chance to practice fundamentals and get some much needed rest.
The Dinos will host Delta Sept. 26. Game time is 7 p.m.
