Traci Mortensen and Brittany Pollastro attempt a block against Wasatch during last years state tournament at UVSC. The Carbon volleyball team has taken second at the state tournament two years in a row, losing both times to Morgan in the championship match. Lady Dinos’ recently participated in the Tournament of Champions at Skyline High School and saw many of the teams that will likely be at state this year.

Carbon volleyball players came out in the middle of the pack, taking eighth out of 16 teams last weekend at an annual Skyline tournament.
The Tournament of Champions is an invitational competition for the top 1A-5A teams in the state.
“I don’t think we played as well as we could have,” Coach Bruce Bean commented. “We are looking to be one of the top teams in the state, not just compete with them.”
Carbon High won six games and lost three. Amongst their wins were Highland, Richfield, Alta, Rich, and North Sanpete.
All of their losses came from higher ranked schools.
Viewmont, a 5A team which is ranked nationally, beat the Lady Dinos. Carbon also lost to Lone Peak, 4A, and Clearfield, 5A.
Bean said the competition was a great test for the team and that it helps to point out their weaknesses.
“We have some thing to work on,” Bean said. “But, we did pretty good.”
For the past two seasons, Carbon has qualified for the state tournament and placed second. The ladies were defeated by Morgan both years.
On their road to another state berth, the Dinos will play in a Las Vegas tournament this weekend. The Vegas tourney includes 48 teams, mostly from the west.
The team has finished in the top eight for the last two years at the Vegas tourney. Their goal this year is to make it to the top four.
Lady Dinos will play their first home game against Judge Memorial Sept. 2 during Homecoming week.
The junior varsity begins at 5:15, followed by the varsity around 6:30 p.m.
