A head-on collision last Friday at mile post 223 on U.S. Highway 6 killed two Spring Glen residents and injured a family of three from Grand Junction, Colo.
According to Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Chuck Watkins, the Aug. 15 crash occurred when both vehicles purportedly entered the center lane to pass.
One witness interviewed by UHP investigators indicated that Calvin and JoAnn Cox of Spring Glen were traveling westbound in an Oldsmobile and the couple’s vehicle had just completed a pass. At the same time, Michael and Sheri Conn of Grand Junction, Colo. were headed eastbound in a Honda Accord with the couple’s 8-year-old daughter, Ariana Abrey, when the collision occurred.
“The Conns entered the center lane to pass a commercial motor vehicle,” noted Watkins. “Someone passed improperly,.
The Cox couple’s vehicle occupied the passing lane prior to the Conns, according to the law enforcement accident report.
Calvin Cox was pronounced dead at the scene and his wife, JoAnn, died later at Castleview Hospital.
Both vehicles were totalled.
Michael Conn was transported to Utah Valley Regional Medical Center in Provo. Sheri Conn was treated then released from Castleview Hospital and the child was taken to Primary Children’s Medical Center via helicopter. The condition of the father and daughter remained unknown Monday morning.
“All collisions can be prevented,” stated Watkins. “People have to be attentive in their driving and drive defensively.”
The accident was reported by a Utah Wildlife Resources Division worker, who radioed the UHP about the mishap.
