The Carbon Dino baseball teams continues to stomp the competition as the Region 8 season draws to a brief halt for the Easter vacation.
Before packing their bags and heading for a relaxing weekend, the boys who make up the Dino’s team traveled to Emery to take on the Spartans.
The Dinos entered the match up riding high on a five game winning streak. Carbon increased this record by one as they defeated the Spartans, 8-0.
This was the second time the two teams have met this season and the Dinos made sure that they claimed the road game victory.
Carbon opened up the game with a quick run in the first inning. Emery was unable to answer. In fact, the Spartans were shut down by the Dinos and remained scoreless throughout the entire competition.
In the second inning, Carbon scored two runs and followed with three runs in the third.
The team continued to make gradual advances by posting a run in the next two innings.
Dino pitcher, Troy Grundy played well for the Dinos and pitched all seven innings. Grundy concluded the game with only four hits.
Senior, Jamal Lewis had a successful showing at bat against Emery. Lewis completed the game with two doubles.
The most notable improvement and one which has been constant throughout the season has been the Dinos hitting abilities.
According to Carbon head coach Lane Herrick, this has been an area which the team continues to improve on each game.
With every match up, the Dinos find help from every player on the squad.
“We have had different players come out and show improvement every game. This continued improvement has moved us into a position which we feel comfortable being in,” the coach explained earlier this week.
As the season comes to a half way point, the Dinos feel confident that they have a chance at the Class 3A title this year.
“We try to take things one at a time, but I think that we have a strong team and should be a strong competitor for state again this year,” state Herrick.
With the state playoffs scheduled for May 15-17, the Dinos are nearing the most important part of the season. The team remains focused however, and will continue to work toward the tourney the next several weeks.
The Dinos will return from the spring break next week to compete against Lehi on April 22 at home and then the Carbon team will hit the road to compete against North Sanpete April 25.
“As a coach, I can’t think of a better place to be right now. This team continues to improve and hang on tight, and their attitude is to be applauded,” concluded the Dino coach.
