New classes and new beginnings are in the future for many seniors at the Carbon County Senior Citizen Center.
CEU’s Debbie Pearson started the computer classes a couple weeks ago and the first class is still underway. The program is being offered through the continuing education program at CEU and so far 42 people have enrolled.
“This is a tremendous response,” says Viki Bowman, director of the center who is busy working with her staff coordinating the first classes. The group is working on six computers, that have been made possible through the county commissioners and surplus equipment.
Bowman also explained that this is a long-term project. The first class introduces the computer to the seniors, many whom have never touched a computer before. The two-hour introduction of computers teaches them the basics of the machine, how to operate a mouse and how to operate desktop and the computer once it is operating.
Once all the participants have completed the first phase they will advance to the next level, which will include using the internet and e-mail classes.
Future classes and the instructors include genealogy taught by Robert Berry, estate planning taught by Steven Burge, and nutrition taught by Laura Lee Hansen. Anyone interested in these classes should watch for announcements on starting dates.
