After undergoing extensive reconstruction last year, the Carbon High track and field was the sight of the Dinos first invitational meet of the year and the first meet conducted on the newly constructed field.
The facility is considered one of the best if not the best field and track venue in the state.
With high tech technology on their side along with a talented track and field team, the Dino meet was nothing less than a complete success.
Nine teams from across the state visited the Price area last Friday and Saturday to compete in the invitational meet.
Judge Memorial finished the meet with a first place boys team trophy.
Carbon finished only eight points behind Judge to claim the second place trophy.
During the meet, 38 distances were met and qualifying times completed which pushed the participants into an automatic state championship birth.
The state meet will take place at BYU in May, but many Utah athletes found themselves already on the state roster at the conclusion of the Carbon meet.
The middle distance boys team had some excellent times for Carbon.
Scott Terry led the field from start to finish and never looked back.
Terry won the 800 meter run in 1:59.76 which qualified him for state. Terry also placed second in the 1600 meter run.
Issac Goodrich placed second in the 3200 meter run missing the qualifying time by about three or four seconds.
Goodrich also placed third in the 1600 meters and fourth in the 800 meter run.
Jacob Burrows and Joe Palmer also had great times in the 800 meter run.
Palmer had personal best times and placed third in the 200 meter run and fifth in the 400 meter race.
Bryan Stewart placed fourth in both the 110 meter high hurdles and 300 meter hurdles.
According to assistant track coach, Stewart Foster, Stewart looked smooth and powerful as he attacked each hurdle.
Stewart also placed sixth in the boys long jump competition.
In the field events, the Dino boys also had a good meet. Lee Prettyman won the javelin competition and Justin Blackham finished in fifth followed by Randy Jones in sixth place.
In the boys shot put, the Dinos scored a lot of points with Perry Laulu who finished in second place.
He was followed by Tyson O’Neil in third and Prettyman in eighth place.
In the boys discus event, Laulu finished in second place followed by Mike Terry in fourth, Prettyman in sixth and Keith Mortenson in eighth place.
In the boys high jump, Neal Mayner placed eighth.
Nearly all the boys who did not place in the top eight where points were scored, did have personal best results.
In the girls events, Amie Stewart placed seventh in the 100 meter hurdles and third in the girls long jump and fourth in the 300 meter hurdles.
Allie Stewart placed eighth in both the 100 and 300 meter hurdles.
The girls placed first in the 400 meter relay which was a pleasant surprise for the girls and coaches alike.
The four girl team consisted of Cora Broadbear, Maquette Potts, Andrea Newby and Jessica Serfustini
Potts placed second in the girls high jump at five feet which qualified her for state. Potts was followed by Serfustini who finished in third place and Newby in sixth place.
“We had a lot of community help that each did a fantastic job and put in a lot of hours to make it a very successful meet. I dare not metnion any names for fear that I will leave someone out. The coaches were very pleased however with each of the athletes. This makes our job easy,” concluded Foster.
The next meet for Carbon will take place March 25 in Lehi.
