With it being spirit week at East Carbon High, it would seem somehow the supernatural would play into helping the Lady Vikes win two games at home this week.
Apparently, the spirits were only on the side of the ECH girls for the first game when they beat Wendover on Tuesday evening, because the fell to Tintic High on Thursday 60-51.
It was once again the story of to little too late, as the Lady Vikes fell behind in the first quarter and lost the scoring battle in the second and third periods as well, and then came back in the fourth to take the scoring honors for that quarter.
They would have rather settled for taking the game.
But that should take nothing away from the East Carbon kids effort, they tried hard and fought even harder.
Tintic came out from the beginning with two little guards who seem to confound the larger guards that play for ECH. They kept swiping the ball and running around like Stuart Little. At the end of the first period Tintic barely led 11-9.
In the second, the same thing was happening, but they took stock of what they were doing when at the 6:58 mark in the second period one of those players went after the ball and Brittnie Leonard decided she was not going to let it happen and held on tight. In the whipping motion of trying to hang onto it the Miners player did a flip onto the floor with a large thud. The whistle blew, she laid there for a moment and then got up. She walked almost to the back of the key and then just collapsed. The Miner coaches rushed in, and then East Carbon and Sunnyside fire fighters who were in the crowd also gathered around the girl. They worked on her for quite some time while the crowd wondered what was going on. They finally carried her over to the bench where she sat up and soon regained her senses. Apparently it was more than just the floor colliding with her head, but the fact that she had an asthma attack right after she got back up.
The game started again, and for a few minutes, the power move by Leonard seemed to calm down the Lady Miners, but soon they were up to their old tricks again, carrying a 34-27 lead into the locker room for half time.
The third period looked similar (without the gymnastics minus the mats) as the kids from Eureka won the quarter 18-13.
In the final period, the East Carbon defense picked up and they held Tintic to eight points while scoring 11, but alas the game was over.
High scorer for East Carbon was Chelsey Timothy with 15 points. Joyce Clark had 12, Leonard had 10 and Misty Valdez put in nine points.
Saturday night, the Vikes competed in an unscheduled, non-league game against Bryce Valley. The woes continued for the East Carbon team as they lost the match up, 47-40.
Once again, Timothy was the leading scorer for the Vikings as she posted 19 points.
The team now goes back on the road to play in Provo at Meridian tonight (Tuesday). They then travel to Duchesne County to play Altamont on Thursday in another non-league contest.
