The Sports View

By Sun Advocate

Have you ever wondered why the world is so fascinated with sports? If you said no, well you’re not alone. That’s why I thought that maybe it would be interesting to explore this question.
Now I don’t claim to know all the answers. In fact, I don’t even know if I know a single answer to this question, but in this little mind of mine, I bounced this idea around.
It just makes me wonder exactly what the attraction is to watch sports. Sure, I’m glued to the television set every Sunday watching football and most nights I find myself either watching a sporting event or at least the sports segment on the nightly news. But what is so interesting about watching grown adults play games?
Maybe it is the idea that a working adult can make millions of dollars playing games for a living.
I always wondered what it would be like to have a job where you can run around like an idiot and get paid to do so. Currently, I run around quite a bit and I’m sure I look like an idiot while I do so, but I also know for a fact that I don’t get paid as much as an athlete and it sure doesn’t seem like a game that I’m participating in.
As a child, I remember participating in several sporting events, both for school teams and just for fun in the front yard. This was fun.
It was a blast to get together with friends and compete in various sporting games. Even today, it is exciting to compete. But why is it so exciting to watch others compete?
Sports has become a lucrative business. It’s not just about having fun and playing for the joy of it. It’s mainly about making the big bucks and landing television endorsements. No wonder why school children grow up with the dream of being on a box of Wheaties instead of a doctor or lawyer.
It amazed me to find out just how much a ticket would cost to attend an Oakland Raiders game.
Last month, my husband and I took our daughter to Disneyland and while we were there, we thought that maybe we could attend the Raiders vs Niners game. A dream match up for this married couple. But when I checked out the ticket prices, I found that it would cost more for the three of us to go to the game than it cost for our airfare, hotels and complete Disney package combined.
The real kick in the backside is that these prices were for nosebleed seats that would require high powered binoculars to identify the field. I guess I’m in the wrong business.
It just seems as if sporting events capture the eyes of millions because of the excitement they generate. After all, the sounds coming out of our home on Sunday afternoon sounds quite similar to a NFL stadium.
With the roar of the television and the sound of booing and cheering coming from the living room, I’m sure our neighbors get their weekly laugh.
Regardless of the reason or reasons, sports fans enjoy watching grown adults play games. I guess it is a little more exciting than watching a world champion chess match on ESPN.
No matter the cost or the reason, sports fans enjoy watching sporting events. Unfortunately, it’s also the fans that pay the price to enjoy their favorite sport.
