East Carbon’s Lady Viking volleyball team is heading to state once again to make it two years in a row.

The East Carbon Lady Vikings will be heading to the state volleyball tournament on Friday for the second time in two years.
Their first game will be against either Layton Christian or Navajo Mountain at the Mackay Center on the Utah Valley State College Campus in Orem.
The final decision as to where they fit in the tournament was decided last Friday when the team lost to regular season champion Dugway, the championship of the Region 18 tournament at Wendover. The score in that set was 15-11, 11-15 and 7-15.
While Dugway has not been highly rated in the state this year their 14-1 record speaks volumes about the Lady Mustangs who are the only other Region 18 team in the state tournament.
They play Whitehorse on Friday morning in their opening game.
East Carbon is in the upper bracket of the 1A tournament, which is probably a good place to be. That’s because most of the teams experts consider the real heavyweights are in the lower bracket, including multiple year winner Rich High School (13-0). The team expected to win it all once again. That is the bracket Dugway is in along with another tough squad Salt Lake Lutheran (13-1).
The upper bracket includes the 11-4 Lady Vikes as a favorite in their first round game, as well as Waterford (13-2) and a very good Green River team (8-1). If both ECH and Waterford win their first game they will play each other at 3 p.m. But regardless if the Lady Vikes win or lose that first game they will play because the state tournament is a double elimination format.
So for Carbon County fans it is a double treat. They can see both Carbon High and East Carbon play on the same courts on the same day. And just possibly they both will be big winners.
It will be a lot of fun.
