After struggling to capture a victory this season, the Carbon High Dinos traveled to Delta to take on Region 8 rival, the Rabbits. In this showdown, the Dinos entered the game filled with confidence and determined to defeat Delta.
The Dinos jumped ahead of the Rabbits early by posting 18 unanswered points by the second quarter. Just before the half however, Delta scored their first points of the night, bringing the halftime score to 18-8.
As the Dinos took to the field in the second half, it seemed as if the level of play had dropped. According to Dino coach Jeff Jorgensen, the team didn’t move the ball well following the half.
Although the Dinos posted seven points in the third quarter, it wasn’t enough to take home the win. In fact, with nearly five minutes left in the game, the Dinos found themselves ahead of Delta 25-18. This is when Delta ran for a touchdown and followed with a two-point conversion to score the win by the final 26-25.
In the Region 8 battle, Carbon was penalized 12 times while Delta finished the game with only one penalty call against them.
“In a game where a team is penalized 10 to 12 times, it is difficult to win, especially when the other team is handed hardly any penalties. It seemed as if each time we got close to evening the score or when we were passing the ball, a penalty was called. It was quite frustrating,” explained Jorgensen.
The seniors continue to dominate the field for Carbon. This past weekend, the offensive line stepped up in the first half and offered excellent coverage for quarterback Jan Jorgensen.
Senior Tyson O’Neil has been a dominant force for the Dinos this season, but it is unknown whether he will be able to play this week. In the second quarter, O’Neil injured his hand, but continued to play the remainder of the game. Afterwards, it was determined that he had broken his hand. With Lehi next on the Dinos schedule, it is unknown whether O’Neil will play.
“We are licking our wounds right now. There are several injuries on the team and we just need to see where we sit Friday,” Jorgensen explained.
The Dinos will host Lehi Friday at 7 p.m. in the last home game of the season.
“Lehi is a beatable team. They are coming off of a loss as well as we are, but I think that this is a game we can win. We are beat up right now, but we can beat them,” concluded Jorgensen.
