Letter to the Editor: Embarrassed by congressman

By Sun Advocate

I am writing to express my unhappiness for Rep. Jim Matheson’s vote in opposition to a ban on partial birth abortions.
I am shocked that such a barbaric practice has ever been allowed to happen in the United States. It seems to me that our society places a shameful amount of value on the lives of children.
The news is flooded with stories of children who have been abused, neglected, exploited, and murdered. I have read, in disbelief, the leniency with which their perpetrators have been slapped on the hand. I have watched as so called medical and judicial “experts” have invented explanations that would have us pity the monsters that are preying on our children. I have shook my head in confusion as I have seen stiffer penalties handed down to people who have been cruel to animals.
If someone were to sever the spine of a grown adult, scramble their brain, and then suck it out through a vacuum, stiff penalties would follow. But do the same thing to a defenseless child and people like Rep. Matheson condone it. How can anyone find logic in this?
I am embarrassed that Mr. Matheson is considered a “representative” of Utah. I don’t think anything could be further from the truth.
I urge the public to take a stand for our children and send a strong message at the polls.
Let Mr. Matheson and his kind know that we do not support these horrible practices.
