| The Carbon Babe Ruth 13 year old team display their second place trophies after competing in the state tournament. Team members include J.D. Sherman, Marcus Zaccaria, A.J. Mitcheson, Colton Howes, Bradey Wilde, J.J. Blue, Tyler Turcasso, Jordan Moynier, Aaron Sandoval, Brett Johnson, Kyle Asay, and Zack Jones. The team is managed by Rick Wilde and coached by Rick Sandoval and Jeff Johnson. |
The Carbon 13 year old A team began their quest for the state tournament on July 8 in Roosevelt against the Roosevelt team. Carbon was victorious with a 24-8 victory. The championship game was played July 10 against Roosevelt with Carbon winning the tournament by the final score of 12-6. Aaron Sandoval was named the tournament MVP.
Carbon then took to the road headed for the state Babe Ruth playoffs. The first game was against Hunter/Cyprus on July 15. The hard hitting Carbon team won the game in five innings with a score of 19-7.
The next game for Carbon was against Murray on July 16 which gave Carbon their first loss of the state tournament by the score of 7-9. Carbon did rally however in the fourth inning when the score was 7-0 in Murray’s favor. By the end of the game however, Murray had scored two more runs to defeat Carbon.
The third game of the tournament for Carbon was held against Riverton. Carbon put this team out of the tournament with a 10 run win in five innings. The final score was 11-1, advancing Carbon in the state tournament brackets.
Carbon moved on to compete against Emery, which is a hometown rivalry. It was a close game with Carbon coming out ahead 9-3.
The victory over Emery moved Carbon into the semi-final game against Murray. The loser would take third place in state and the winner would move on to play for the championship. Because Murray had beaten Carbon earlier on in the tourney, the game was one which Carbon felt they had to win. This was just what Carbon did. In only five innings, Carbon had defeated Murray 12-1.
Moving on into the championship game, Carbon faced Taylorsville. Up until the sixth inning, Carbon was ahead, then Taylorsville managed to squeeze two runners in on suicide plays to move ahead on the scoreboard. Carbon finished the tournament with a second place win after losing to Taylorsville, 6-5.
Although Carbon lost the ball game, they did win the batting battle. In fact, Carbon had 10 hits to Taylorsville three.
The hard work and dedication these young athletes showed throughout the season proved to be worthwhile as they finished the season on a winning note with a second place state finish.
