Edward Piacitelli
PRICE – Edward G. Piacitelli, age 88, died May 23, 2002 at his home in Price.
He was born Sept. 26, 1913 to John Anthony and Helen Williams Piacitelli in Segundo, Colo. Married Nora Teasdale May 7, 1938. They were sealed in the Salt Lake LDS Temple Oct. 17, 1998.
He served in the Army during World War II. He was employed by Price city, Eastern Utah Electric and College of Eastern Utah. He was a member of the Lions Club.
He will be missed by his loving family and many special friends.
He is survived by his children and their spouses, Sue and Frank Rinna, James E. Piacitelli, Daniel J. and Pam Piacitelli, Pam and Jim Christensen; 19 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Nora Dalpiaz and Helen Jean Smith; and brothers, Rev. Henry Piacitelli and John Piacitelli. Preceded in death by his wife, Nora; his parents; his sisters, Mildred Kasparec, Florence Piacitelli and Adeline LeBar.
Funeral services will be Thursday, May 30, at 11 a.m. at the Price 4th/5th LDS Ward Chapel. Friends may call Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Fausett Mortuary in Price and one hour prior to services at the church. Burial will be in Price City Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the American Cancer Society.
Eliasim Lopez
SUNNYSIDE-Eliasim Lopez, age 80, passed away May 22, 2002 at Castleview Hospital in Price.
He was born February 22, 1922 in Dulce, N. Mex., to Elias and Abigal Lopez. Married Gloria Marquez, February 1, 1958 in Parkview, New Mex.
Member of the Catholic Church. Eliasim worked for D&RGW for many years and was a resident of Sunnyside since 1982. He had a great sense of humor and loved to make everyone laugh. Eliasim loved animals and riding his little red scooter.
Survived by his wife, Gloria Lopez, Sunnyside; sons, Daniel (Lisa) Lopez, East Carbon; Alex Lopez and Bernie, East Carbon; David (Tanya) Lopez, East Carbon; daughters, Marie (Jack) Williams, Salt Lake City; Betty Rampa and Orie, Price; sister, Clara Tofoya, Dulce N. Mex.; and 12 grandchildren. Preceded in death by parents; son, Julian; and son-in-law, David Rampa.
Funeral Mass, Tuesday, May 28, 10 a.m., St. Anthony Catholic Church in Helper. Family will be at Mitchell’s Tuesday one hour prior to services. Committal service, Mt. View Cemetery, Helper, under the direction of Mitchell Funeral Home.
Francis Scartezina
PRICE/TUCSON, Ariz. Long time Price resident and well known businessman, Francis Joseph Scartezina, 86, passed away Sunday, May 19, 2002 after a short illness.
Born in Denver, Colorado, April 7,1916 to Guiseppi and Mary Barich Scartezzini, he was the eldest son of six children.
Francis married Emma Lucile Gunderson on September 21, 1940 and together they had three children, Sandra (Martin) Turbidy, Paul (Dolores) Scartezina, and Dan (Linda) Scartezina. Grandchildren, Nancy, Angela, Dan, Mike, Nick and Max, also great grandchildren Anthony J. (A.J.) Scartezina and Lucille Elizabeth Pietri. Emma preceded Francis in death.
Francis was active in the community and was a past president of the Carbon Country Club, former president of the Western Boys Baseball Little League and lifetime member of B.P.O.E. 1550. He donated time and resources to many community and religious projects. His early years were spent caring for his mother and family because of his father’s premature death.
A successful businessman, he was the owner/operator of Scarty’s Construction Company from which he retired at an early age and continued to pursue his interests in land acquisition, travel and fishing with his family. He and Emma celebrated over 50 years together and had a retirement that we would all wish for.
In accordance with Francis’ wishes, he will be cremated. Friends and family may call at Mitchell’s Funeral Home, Tuesday, June 4 between 6 and 8 p.m. and from 9 to 10 a.m. Wednesday prior to graveside services which will be held at the Price Cemetery, June 5 at 10:30 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the Emma Scartezina Nursing Scholarship Fund, CEU, 451 East 400 North.
Del Ray Brotherson
ELMO – Del Ray Brotherson, age 72, passed away May 26, 2002 at his home.
He was born June 17, 1929 in Elmo to Orson Hyde and Mada Axelsen Brotherson. He married Clarasee Dalton Oct. 6, 1950 in Cleveland. She passed away in 1984.
He worked for 40 years in the coal mine for U.S. Fuel at Hiawatha.
He loved hunting and fishing, especially with his family and friends. He loved to work with wood, whether building homes or furniture. He enjoyed the companionship of his coffee shop buddies.
He served in the U.S. Army, stationed in Guam following WWII.
He is survived by his children, Delena and Larry Fish of Elmo, Craig and Roma Brotherson of Elmo and Madean and Wade Lemon of Holden; 13 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Also survived by one sister, Afton Erickson. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, May 29, at 11 a.m. at the Elmo LDS Chapel. Friends may call Tuesday evening from 7 to 8 p.m. at Fausett Mortuary in Price and one hour prior to services at the church. Burial will be in the Elmo Cemetery.
Gary Cox
CASTLE DALE – Gary D. Cox, loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, returned to his Father in Heaven Thursday, May 23, 2002, at his home in Castle Dale after a long battle with MS.
Gary was born April 8, 1932 in Orangeville to Donald T. Cox and Helen Fox. He married Della Draper Aug. 9, 1952 in Orangeville. Marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple.
Soon after they married, he was called by the United States Army to serve two years in the Korean War. Gary and Della raised their family in Utah and Colorado, while he labored long and hard as a steel worker and miner. They made a final move to Utah in 1969 and made their home in Castle Dale, where Gary continued to work in the mines in Emery County until he was forced to retire in 1977.
Gary served valiantly in church callings, including Sunday School teacher, elders quorum presidency, bishoprics and stake presidencies. He had a deep and abiding love for the gospel and his family.
Gary loved herding sheep, hunting, camping and hiking in the mountains that surround Emery County.
Gary never spoke an unkind word or felt ill feelings for family or neighbors. He was loved by everyone who knew him and it was alsways a joy to be in his presence. The desires of his soul were to live the gospel and have his family around him.
He is survived by his wife, Della; daughter Debra (Cory) Britton, Bicknell; son, Phillip (Marquita), Orangeville; son, Rodney (Gayleen), Orangeville; daughter, Janine (Kevin) Gallacher, Denver, Colo.; 15 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He is also survived by three brothers, one sister and a sister-in-law. Preceded in death by a sister, an infant son, brother, mother and father.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, May 29, at 11 a.m. at the Castle Dale LDS Stake Center. Interment, Orangeville Cemetery.

Kathryn ‘Kay’ Houskeeper
PRICE – Kathryn “Kay” Christensen Houskeeper, age 87, passed away May 24, 2002 in Price.
She was born Aug. 17, 1914 in Price to Thomas A. and Katherine Grames Christensen. She married Theodore “Ted” B. Houskeeper Feb. 26, 1938 in Price, later solemnized in the Manti LDS Temple April 3, 1965.
Her passion for life was primarily for her family and then for the world around her. She excelled at poetry (having been published), painting and photography. She loved roses and spent countless hours caring for her beautiful flower gardens. In her younger years, her love of music prompted her to become skilled at the violin and also the mandolin. She also crocheted and was a talented pastry chef, having been taught by her English mother.
Kay is survived by her children, Brent and Connie Houskeeper, West Jordan; Skip and Lucille Houskeeper, Price; Linda and Vern Osmond, Rock Springs, Wyo.; Craig and Dawna Houskeeper, Price; 18 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren. Also survived by brothers, Bud Christensen and Dale Christensen of Price. Preceded in death by her husband, Ted; two daughters, Myrna Loa and Venda Evelyn; and sister, Alice Bentley.
Funeral services will be Tuesday, May 28, at 1 p.m. at the Price 4th LDS Ward Chapel, where friends may call one hour prior to services. Burial will be in the Price City Cemetery under the direction of Fausett Mortuary.
Emil Tomsic
SALT LAKE CITY – Emil John Tomsic, 77, passed away May 15, 2002 at his home, surrounded by his loving family.
He was born March 9, 1925 in Spring Glen, to Robert Jerry and Agnes Strakey Tomsick. He married Juanita Helen Jowell June 23, 1951 in Price. The marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple.
He was drafted at age 18 into the U.S. Marine Corp. where he served his country in the South Pacific during World War II. Upon his discharge he worked at the Castle Gate Coal mine as a machine operator and for the D & RG Railroad as a fireman. He later moved to Salt Lake and worked at Western Steel. His relentless and unbridled ambition lead him to start his own business. He was a well respected excavating contractor and founder of Tomsic and Sons Inc. He was much admired for his skill with earth moving machinery. He was proud to work with his wife, children and grandchildren in his business. We marveled at his ability to fix everything that was broken or needed repair. He leaves behind a great legacy for his family. He was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and loved to sing with the ward choir. He enjoyed gardening, playing his accordion, fishing and spending time with his family at their Scofield Cabin.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years; sons, Brian, Brent and Brad; daughter, Kim; grandchildren, Scott, Sidni, Tyler and Jordan Tomsic; daughter-in-law, Kathy Hendrickson; and sister, Helen Files, Daly City, Calif. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Albert, Frank and Robert.
Funeral was held Monday, May 20, at the Cottonwood 11th LDS Ward. Interment at Wasatch Lawn.
