| Jeff Jorgensen offers encouraging words to last seasons Dino football squad. For the past three years, Jorgensen has been an assistant coach for the team. After head coach Troy Moynier resigned, the school district has been searching for a replacement. Several offers had been made, but all fell through. Jorgensen, who is a strong supporter for Carbon High athletics decided that enough was enough and vowed to take over as the head coach this season. Jorgensen’s main focus for the team is to have fun and to gain parental support for the athletic club. If these factors fall into place, Jorgensen expects to be coaching for quite some time. |
During the off season, College of Eastern Utah assistant mens basketball coach Keith Berrard remains busy by searching for players that could add talent to the Eagles team next season. Also part of Berrard’s summer job is to assist current players in finding contracts with four year schools and universities. So far, Berrard has had some great success.
“I’m still looking for recruits for next season. By the end of the week, I feel that I will know more about who is coming to CEU to play ball,” explained Berrard.
After completing last season with an overall record of 20-12, several Eagles players caught the eyes of colleges across the county. Amongst these athletes was Skyler Wilson who finished the season ranked number one in the Scenic West Athletic Conference in free throw percentage with an average of 85 percent.
Wilson has signed a contract with Cal State Stanislaus where he will offer his excellent ball handling skills to aid the team. Also signing with Cal State was Nick Whiting who also gave the Eagles a helping hand at the free throw line by averaging 56 percent.
Arkansas Tech has also noticed the talented Eagles squad and has signed Josh Hatch to a contract and are currently negotiating with Antoine Reynolds. It seems as if Reynolds, who finished the season ranked number one in the SWAC in field goal percentage with an average of 62 percent, will soon be signing with the Arkansas team. “They are really interested in Antoine, but the details are still being worked out,” explained Berrard.
Renaldo Knowles graduated this spring and is also looking to continue his career, but it is unknown whether he will compete in basketball or volleyball. Possibly, if the offer is right, Knowles may compete in both sports.
Knowles, who averaged 1.78 steals per game offered a great defensive game to the Eagles last season, but his true love is in volleyball. “He has played in the junior national team and the national team in the Bahamas. He just wants to get back to the competition of volleyball,” explained Berrard.
Although the Eagles will have several key players return next season, the team is in need of filling the roster for those who will not. “I have been working on recruiting several players, but as of right now, I’m not sure exactly who will be coming to play for CEU,” concluded Berrard.
As the summer months approach, and most of the current basketball staff and players hit the golf course, Berrard intends to continue his search for talented players to compete for the Eagles next season. It’s a tough job, but somebody has to do it.
