May 1 turned out to be a great day for the Carbon High boys track team. The region eight track and field meet was held at Delta High School. Although the coaches did not plan on winning the region title in the boys event, the team had other plans.
Scott Terry, Cody Butler, and Isaac Goodrich placed first, second, and third in the boys 3200 meter run. The official times were 10:14, 10:20, and 10:32.
The coaches were a little concerned that Goodrich might not qualify for state, but he was able to pass a couple of runners in the last 100 meters.
Terry not only won the 3200 meter race, but also the 1600 meter and the 800 meter. Both of these races came down to the wire, with Terry finishing both successfully. According to coach Stewart Foster, “Terry seems like a happy-go-lucky kid, but when it comes down to a battle in a race, he changes his personality and becomes very determined to succeed.”
Butler placed third in the 1600 meters to qualify in this event for state. Goodrich could not manage to place in the top four to qualify for the state meet. He did however finish in sixth place.
In the 800 meter run, Seth Marsing finished third and close behind was Terry. Jacob Burrows also ran an excellent 800 meter race and placed fifth with a time of 2:12.
In the boys hurdles, Bryan Stewart made it to the finals in both the 110 meter race and the 300 meter hurdles. Stewart qualified for state by placing third in the 110 meter hurdles event and finished sixth in the 300 meter hurdles.
Joe Palmer qualified for the finals in the 400 meter dash, placing fifth in the finals.
In the boys medley relay, Marsing was asked to run another 800 meters just 10 minutes after he competed in the open 800 meters. Marsing responded and ran for a time of 2:03. Palmer lead off the relay followed by Matt Hough, then T.J. Potts ran the 400 meter section. The team gave Marsing a good opportunity as they stayed close to the other teams. Marsing received the baton in third place, and just won the race in the last 50 meters.
In the field events, Potts placed second in the high jump and second in the long jump to qualify for state in both events.
Perry Laulu also qualified for the state competition by finishing in fourth place in the shot put, while Lee Prettyman placed first and qualified in the javelin.
The Dinos team finished the region meet in first place followed by Delta, North Sanpete, Emery, and Lehi.
The boys put on a great show for the crowd. The Carbon boys track and field team has not won a region meet for a number of years and the victory tasted good to the talented team.
The Carbon girls team also did a great job with a second place finish behind Delta. Carbon was followed by Lehi, Emery, and North Sanpete.
Melanie Madsen ran a smart race to win the 3200 meter run, with Alyssa Donaldson taking fourth place. Both girls will now be qualified for state.
In the girls hurdles, Cora Broadbear had a personal best time in the finals of the 100 meter and 300 meter hurdles. Broadbear placed sixth in the 100 meter hurdles, and fifth in the 300 meter hurdles.
Danielle Julian ran a personal best time in the 400 meter heats, and finished fourth in the finals to qualify for state. Both Andrea Newby and Julian qualified for the finals in the 200 meters. Newby placed sixth in the finals.
In the 1600 meter run, Madsen placed third. The first, second, and third place winners were decided by 50-100 of a second. This race was an exciting and close race.
Stephanie Cox finally started believing in herself and ran away with the 800 meter race to take first place.
Ashley Rowley placed fourth in the 800 meter event by nosing out another girl from North Sanpete at the finish line. Both Rowley and Cox will now compete at the state finals.
The medley relay for the girls also qualified the participants for the state meet. The team consisting of Newby, Madsen, Broadbear, and Jessica Serfustini finished the region meet in third place in the medley event.
In the 4×400 meter relay, the Dino girls placed second with Julian, Cox, Alicia Torres, and Serfustini competing.
In the field events, Torres placed first in the high jump, with teammates Serfustini placing third, and Maquette Potts finishing in fifth place.
Becky Unsworth had her best throw off to defeat Emery’s Mindy Larson for first place and qualified for state, while Emily Rice placed third in javelin.
Brittany Pollastro won the shot put competition with Michelle Ruden placing fourth in the event. Both girls are now qualified for the state finals.
The coaches are excited about the season and are impressed with the Dinos performance at the region meet. The next step for the team is the state finals which will be held May 10-11 at BYU.
