| Despite cold and rainy weather athletes from across the state competed in the annual BYU Invitational April 27. The competition was strong and Carbon had a strong showing as the team raced for several personal best times at the meet. |
The BYU Invitational track meet held April 27, brought out the best in Utah high school athletes. The event pitted 3A, 4A, and 5A schools against one another. A great number of these athletes recently returned from California where they competed against the top track and field athletes in the country. In this event, Utah fared quite well by placing quite high in many events, and also by getting the fastest times in the country in some events.
These top rate athletes then came together to compete at the prestigious state event at BYU. Amongst these athletes was the Carbon High Dino track and field team.
In the 3200 meter event, Scott Terry ran in the first section, in which he placed second with a personal best time of 10:05.77. This time was exceptionally good considering the cold and rainy conditions that plagued the field.
After the two sections of the 3200 meter run had been completed, Terry was fourth over all in the 3A category while Cody Butler was fifth with his personal best time this year.
In the 1600 meter event, Butler defeated his competition by 50 yards.
In the 800 meter run, Terry placed fifth while Seth Marsing finished in seventh place in the 3A division.
Lee Prettyman finished up the boys events with an over all finish of fifth place in the javelin event.
The Dino girls also did quite well at the event. Melanie Madsen lead the girls by placing sixth over all in the girls 3200 meter run in the 3A division.
In the high jump event, the water kept building up on the runway, which lead to the event being stopped momentarily while the area was squeegeed off. The event proved to be tough however, with only four girls out of 60 clearing the opening height.
Because of the bad weather, the event was delayed several times for as long as one to two hours. The delays effected the jumping and throwing events the most. The delays not only caused confusion, but also frustration for most of the competitors.
Over all, the Dino team looked pretty good. The team travelled to Delta May 1 to compete in the regional tournament. Hopefully, the weather will cooperate and allow the athletes to compete in the best possible conditions.
