As the season rapidly nears an end, the Carbon High track and field team kicks up their heels. Seth Marsing has had a successful season so far this year. Marsing defeated the competition in the 800 meter run and also brought his medley team up from behind to win the event at the Emery High meet April 24. |
The Carbon High Dinos track and field team gathered more than their share of medals at the Emery High School meet held April 24.
The Dino team was lucky to arrive just in the nick of time. The meet was just beginning when the team arrived. Coach Elias Perez misunderstood the start time as being at 3:30 p.m. when the actual start time was 3:00 p.m. The athletes from Carbon then had to change quickly to make the races on time.
By the time that Issac Goodrich got to the starting line for the 3200 meter run, the gun had gone off and he was 13 seconds behind the pack. Goodrich caught up to the runners about 500 yeards into the race, and from that point on, Goodrich took the lead and never looked back, finishing in first place.
In the boys 1600 meter run, Scott Terry ran away from the field, completing his first 400 meters in 62 seconds, leaving all other runners in the dust, as he finished his personal best time with a state qualifying time of 4:32.39. Cody Butler placed second behind Terry also with a personal best time for this year.
According to assistant coach Tiffany Stewart-Swasey, “both Matt Hough and Joe Palmer looked real good and had personal best times” in the sprints. Stewart also liked the way that Bryan Stewart is coming along in the hurdles. Stewart places third in the 300 meter hurdles and fifth in the 110 meter hurdles.
Seth Marsing stunned the crowd by winning the open 800 meters in a time of 2:03.44. Ten minutes later, Marsing came back from being 50 meters behind on the anchor leg of the medley relay to run a two minute, eight second 800 meter run to win the medley relay for the Dinos. Also competing in the medley relay were Hough, Palmer, and T.J. Potts.
The final relay for the boys was the 4×400 meter relay. The team, consisting of Terry who had a 51.95 lead off run, Palmer, Marsing, and Cody Butler, beat out the hosting team Emery, along with the rest of the field. The team missed the automatic state qualifying time by .26/100 of a second.
In the field events, Perry Laulu placed second with a toss of 42 feet, two and a half inches. Perry had just started this last week and probably not thrown the shot since the ninth grade.
Lee Prettyman placed second in the javelin with a throw of 150 feet, 10 inches.
Potts also had a great meet, with a third place finish in the high jump. All together, the Dinos had a good meet, with excellent performances from all the boys, including Jacob Burrows and Brennan Woodward in the boys 800 meter run.
The girls team also competed quite strong, being lead by Brittany Polastro who placed first in the girls shot put with a toss of 34 feet, one inch, which qualifies her for state. Polastro, like Laulu, just started to come out and compete in track this past week. Polastro has a lot of potential in any activity she tries, and shot put should be no different.
Becky Unsworth placed third in the discus throw, and Emily Rice placed third in the javelin with a throw of 104 feet, 10 inches.
For the girls, Alicia Torres and Jessica Serfustini both cleared five feet even in the high jump, placing them in first and second place, with Maquette Potts finishing in fourth place.
Melanie Madsen easily ran to victory in the girls 3200 meter run, with Jana Burrows finishing in second place. Madsen also placed second in the girls 1600 meter run.
Danielle Julian placed third in the girls 400 meters and ran on the 4×100 meter relay team with Stephanie Cox, Serfustini and Cora Broadbear, to finish in second place.
The other girls relay teams also finished strong, with a second place finish in the 1600 medley relay and a third place finish in the 4×400 relay.
