As the season rapidly approaches an end, the Carbon High tennis team finds itself in excellent shape. The team has been on fire this season, with athletes making an impression everywhere they go. In fact, the state championships just might be on schedule for most, if not all of the varsity team members.
In a most extraordinary showing last Wednesday, the Dinos hosted Uintah. The outcome was successful for the Dinos who defeated Uintah, 5-0.
In the singles match ups, all three of the Dino members played strong. Matt King was on top of his game as he easily defeated his opponent, 6-2, 6-2. King who has played strong all season for the Dinos only seems to get better with each game. King is a sure contender for the state title this year.
Joe Harber has also had a tremendous season for the Dinos. Harber found himself behind at the completion of the first set. Harber lost to Uintah’s Mike Mansfield 3-6. Going into the second set, Harber continued to struggle, finding himself down 4-0 midway in the set. Harber then rallied to defeat Mansfield, 7-5. The momentum was now on Harber’s side as he entered into the third and deciding set. Harber found his swing as he easily defeated Mansfield 6-1.
Bo Christensen returned to action for the Dinos after missing last weeks match up against Lehi. Christensen played well with everything falling into place. An easy victory for Christensen came in the form of a 6-2 and 6-1 victory of Uintah’s Andrew Judd.
The doubles matches also turned out prosperous for the Dinos. Ryne Vogel and Kellen Spillman have shown improvements as the season has progressed. In recent weeks, the team has played more relaxed and more confident. The teams hard work paid off as Spillman and Vogel easily won their two sets, 6-3,6-2.
In the final match up on Wednesday, Sean Watkins and Neal Maynes came from behind to also defeat their Uintah opponents. Watkins and Maynes lost the first set, 6-7. Going into the second set, the team was disappointed and struggling to gain control of the set. By the end of the hard fought second set battle, the Carbon team found themselves on top, 7-5.
The third set then would determine the winner of the match up. Maynes and Watkins were now reenergized and ready for battle. The Dino duo ended victorious, 6-3.
The final match score of 5-0 left the Dinos longing for more. The team has only one more match up before the regional tournament which will be held May 3 in Delta. The team has extraordinary talent and is bound to make a strong appearance at the regional tournament.
