The College of Eastern Utah has scheduled the 2002 graduation ceremony on May 4 at 10:30 a.m. at the Bunnell-Dmitrich Athletic Center.
CEU President Ryan Thomas will be the commencement speaker. Co-valedictorians are Cristen Carlson Johnson and Miranda Dawn Sorensen.
Johnson is a native of Price and a 2000 high honor graduate of Carbon High School. She is the daughter of Steve and Diane Carlson of Price. While at CEU, she has maintained a 4.0 grade point average while majoring in math education and coaching part time at Mont Harmon Junior High.
Johnson’s career goal is to teach math and coach at the high school level. Her educational plan is to complete her degree and obtain a teaching certificate from Southern Utah University, where she has been offered an academic scholarship. She is married to Val Johnson.
Sorensen is the daughter of Todd and Elaine Olsen of Springville and Jonathan and Cheryl Sorensen of Roosevelt. She graduated from Union High School with honors. Miranda attended CEU on a two-year academic scholarship with a nursing degree as her goal. She has worked in the academic advising office and has been involved in the SUN Volunteer Center for two years. She will graduate from the licensed practical nursing program with a 4.0 grade point average. She has been accepted into CEU’s associate degree registered nursing program.
Honorary degrees will be awarded to Dr. Max Gorishek Morgan of Price and to Duane A. Frandsen, a longtime resident of Price who lived in Provo prior to his death.
Born and raised in Scofield and Helper, Morgan graduated from Carbon High School in 1962. He received an associate of arts degree from Carbon College in 1964. He received a bachelor of science degree from the University of Utah in 1966 and earned a doctorate of medicine at the U of U in 1971.
Morgan opened a family practice in Price in 1972. He has served on the staff at the East Carbon Clinic, Carbon Hospital and Castleview Hospital. He was named chief of staff at Castleview from 1994-96. He received the Physicians Recognition Award of the American Medical Association and the Associate of the Academy Award.
In addition, Morgan was a member of the state wildlife board from 1993-95 and currently serves as the chairman. He belongs to many wildlife foundations and sportsmen and shooting organizations. Morgan was selected as the CEU outstanding alumnus in 1997.
Frandsen was born in Ephraim and graduated from Gunnison Valley High School in 1931. He attended Snow College and received a jurist doctorate from the U of U Law School.
He was appointed Emery County attorney in 1939 and later married Velma Black.
He accepted a job with the office of public administration in Salt Lake City in 1943 and returned to Price as Carbon County attorney in 1945, serving in the office until 1957. He practiced law in the Price area for 40 years until his retirement in 1985.
Frandsen served as president of the state and Southeast Utah Bar Association. He also served as a CEU trustee, a Brigham Young University and Utah Valley State College development committee member and as vice president of the Utah National Parks Council of the Boy Scouts of America. He served on numerous boards and was a member of the legislative compensation commission at the time of his passing.
