When the state baseball rankings emerged from upstate on Tuesday morning, everyone expected the Dinos to lose their top ranking after their loss to Lehi last Friday. Most thought they would fall to second or maybe even third place. But few expected them to ranked as low as fourth and to have Lehi ahead of them.
But that is what happened. So on Tuesday afternoon, the team just went out and proved that they still belong in the top three by disassembling North Sanpete 10-0.
North Sanpete isn’t that good this year, but just the same the Dinos showed their wares from batting to pitching and whoever saw them should be buying; they were dominant.
The first inning was scoreless as the Dinos were just starting the scoring machine up and it was still a little cold.
But in the second inning, the bats got hot and the Dinos ran away like a sprint car from the first turn of a track. They blasted out three runs in the inning.
In the third inning Carbon beat out two more runs and then took a rest in the fourth.
In the fifth and sixth inning once again the 3-2 run pattern was repeated again and Carbon won the game in six innings.
Pitching was the key to cutting off the Hawks early. Matt Jewkes pitched for the first five innings, giving up only three hits that went absolutely nowhere. Troy Grundy finished up the game when Jewkes came out.
In the batting department Jeff Anderson went 4-4 on the road to driving in four runs.
This victory will not improve the rankings for the Dinos, but it did get them back on the winning track. Unless there are some upsets involving Park City, Bear River and Lehi, it is doubtful that Carbon will see that number one ranking again this year unless they win the championship out right. The Miners and Bears are undefeated in their regions and the way rankings work, whatever happened lately is more important than what happened earlier, so the Pioneers victory over the Dinos last week counts more than Carbons early season victory over the Utah County squad.
Carbon’s next game is against a very good Delta squad at the Rabbit’s home field. Delta has beaten some people by a lot this year, but lost on Tuesday night to Lehi 14-4 in five innings at Lehi.
The final regular season home game for the Dinos will be against Emery on April 26.
