Bessie Mahleres
PRICE – Our loving wife, mother and grandmother, Bessie Mahleres, age 78, passed away April 13, 2002 at her home following a courageous battle with cancer.
She was born Aug. 1, 1923 in John Day, Ore., to Pete and Katherine Speropoulos Coleman. Married John H. Mahleres Oct. 28, 1945 at the Assumption Greek Orthodox Church in Price.
Bessie attended schools in Baker, Ore., and Boise, Idaho. She graduated from Boise Business College. She returned to Baker, Ore., and was employed with the Soil Conservation of Baker.
Bessie was later employed by the Carbon School District and the College of Eastern Utah prior to retirement. She was a member of the Beta Sigma Phi.
Bessie was an active member of the Assumption Greek Orthodox Church, where she was a member of the choir and the Philoptochos.
Survived by her husband, John Mahleres; daughter, ReNee Soumbeniotis; son, Johnny (Nancy) Mahleres; son-in-law, Dr. Jim Soumbeniotis; grandchildren, Elene and Michael Soumbeniotis; Nicole Mahleres. Preceded in death by parents; and brother, Jim Coleman.
Funeral service Wednesday, April 17, 11 a.m., Assumption Greek Orthodox Church. Trisagion service Tuesday evening 7 p.m., Mitchell Funeral Home in Price. Family will be at Mitchell’s Tuesday and Wednesday one hour prior to services. Interment, Price City Cemetery.

Thelma Sherman
CLEVELAND – Thelma Rae Eriksen Sherman, age 69, passed away peacefully April 11, 2002 at her home.
She was born July 31, 1932 in Cleveland to Carl R. “Whitey” and Cell Christensen Eriksen. Thelma married Joseph R. Sherman June 18, 1951 in Ferron, later solemnized in the Manti LDS Temple June 16, 1992.
She loved bowling and was very good at it. She enjoyed shopping and visiting with people. She had a profound love of people and helping those in need. She deeply loved her children and grandchildren and was “the proudest grandma ever.”
Thelma is survived by her husband, Joe, with whom she shared 50 wonderful years residing in Cleveland; two children, Jolene R. Ekstrom and husband, Dee, Ogden; Carl G. “Shorty” Sherman and wife, Cindy, Huntington; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; and a brother, Arthur Erickson. Preceded in death by parents and three brothers.
She was dearly loved and will be deeply missed by her family and many friends she leaves behind.
Funeral services will be Tuesday, April 16, at 11 a.m. at the Cleveland LDS Chapel. Friends may call one hour prior to services. Burial will be in the Cleveland Cemetery under the direction of Fausett Mortuary.
Clell Duncan
GREEN RIVER – Our beloved Clell Taylor Duncan, age 80, passed away April 11, 2002 as a result of a four-wheeler accident outside of Green River.
He was born Dec. 26, 1921 in Freemont to Penn and Minnie Duncan. He married Reta T. Workman in Salt Lake City on Nov. 11, 1947.
He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. He was a school shop teacher for several years and was a master at carpentry.
He also loved reading, welding, square dancing and ATV four-wheeling, which he was doing at the time of his death. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
He will be greatly missed by a loving family, which includes his wife, Reta T. Duncan, Green River; his children, Bradley (Jan) Duncan, Loa; Gil Duncan, Francine (Mike) Randolph, Julie (Russell) Spadafora, all of Green River; six grandchildren and one very special great-grandchild. Also survived by his siblings, Ilda Johnson, Washington; LuJuan Hatt, Green River; Cuma Johnson, Parawon; Clea Duncan, Antioch, Calif.; and Brent Duncan, Tooele. He was preceded in death by his parents; and siblings, Norman Duncan, Lois Duncan, Mazel Curtis, LaRell Duncan and Blaine Duncan.
Friends may call at the Green River LDS Chapel Tuesday, April 16, from 11 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Funeral services will be at the church at 1 p.m. Interment will follow in the Elgin Cemetery under the direction of Fausett Mortuary.
Olive Magann
BOUNTIFUL/HELPER – Olive Chiono Magann died April 11, 2002 in Bountiful after a lingering illness.
She was born Olive Elizabeth Chiono March 17, 1913 to Martin Pietro Chiono and Bessie Mollard Chiono. She married Verdis (Tuffy) Magann on March 30, 1933.
Olive spent most of her adult life in Castle Gate, where she worked for many years in the Confectionery. She retired from the Carbon County School District and was a member of the Catholic Church.
She is survived by son, Neil (Jean) Magann, Tooele; daughters, Verla (Ray) Jones, West Bountiful; Karen Maloney, Highlands Ranch, Colo.; Loretta Magann, Paonia, Colo.; stepdaughter, Connie (Jack) Synder, Murray; daughter-in-law, Ora Magann, Helper; sisters, Evelyn Terrell, Murray; Lois Rick, West Valley City; sisters-in-law, Mary Chino (Chiono), Ogden; Alice Magann, Helper; Verda Oldham, Panguich; 14 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by husband; parents; stepfather, James Oldham; son, Tom Magann; three sisters and five brothers.

Jimmie Mortensen
KEARNS – Jimmie Lee Mortensen, age 68, passed away April 11, 2002 in Salt Lake City.
He was born July 20, 1933 in Emery to LaVon C. and LaNelda Johnson Mortensen. Married Joan Polve May 5, 1956 in Helper. She died Nov. 23, 1986.
Former resident of Carbon and Emery counties prior to moving to Kearns, where he drove truck for Albertson’s and later retired from Wanship Enterprises. He served in the U.S. Army.
Jimmie enjoyed tinkering with small motors and his favorite hobby was repairing old lawn mowers and reselling them.
Survived by two daughters; four sons; 10 grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; his caregiver, Constance Ernsten, Kearns; brother, Rex Mortensen, Monticello; sisters, Madge Poulos, Price; Pauline Nikas, Salt Lake City; Susan Bonacci, Helper; Myrtle Bejork, Salt Lake City; Marjorie Jones, Salt Lake City; brother, Keith Mortensen Colorado Springs, Colo. Preceded in death by his parents.
Graveside service Friday, April 19, 1 p.m., Spring Glen Cemetery. Family will be at Mitchell Funeral Home , 233 E. Main Street in Price, Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
