The 1997 decision calling for improvement and mitigation of the Lake Canyon area of the Manti-LaSal National Forest failed to consider user created trails and motorized vehicle use.
The area is located at the northern end of the Miller Flat Road in Emery and Sanpete counties, pointed out the Price-Ferron ranger district office.
Use of all-terrain vehicles in the Lake Canyon area of the forest has expanded tremendously since the 1997 decision was made, added the Price-Ferron ranger district.
In order to responsibly implement the project, the final design must examine trail opportunities, closure and rehabilitation of unauthorized trails, as well as rider education and enforcement, pointed put the local forest office.
The Price-Ferron ranger district is initiating a scoping letter to solicit public comments on a proposed trail system that would supplement the original 1997 decision, according to the federal agency.
The trail system proposal recommends the following actions:
•Construction of almost 12 miles of new trails in the Lake Canyon area of the Manti-LaSal Forest.
•Rehabilitation of more than seven miles of user created trails.
•Shared use of four miles of existing forest roads.
•Construction of trail bridges.
•Construction of barriers and gates.
•Conversion of a non-motorized trail to a motorized trail.
•An eventual implementation of a fee structure that would be used for maintenance and improvement activities.
The proposal would have an effect on traditional grazing and water uses in the area.
