Carbon Dinos tennis team swinging strong

By Sun Advocate

The season is well underway for the Carbon High tennis team. The team currently stands at three wins versus two losses.
In the first match, Carbon traveled to St. George, and took on last years 3A state champions, the Dixie Flyers. The Dinos lost that match 5-0. The experience allowed the team to compete against a top ranked team and gave the Dinos the experience needed to compete for a state title.
The second scheduled match was held against Snow Canyon. Unfortunately for the Dinos, the match was snowed out before it was completed. Before the snow arrived however, Matt King won his match at number one singles 6-2,6-2.
In the Dinos third match of the season, the team travelled to Uintah for a match against the Utes. Carbon lost in a very close match, 3-2. The bright spots for Carbon were in number one and number two singles. King finished victorious at number one singles 6-2, 6-3.
At number two singles, Joe Harber finished on top 6-4, 6-3. This match came down to the doubles teams, where Neal Maynes and Kellen Spillman lost in a three set match, and Ryne Vogel and Chris Powell also lost a tough three set match.
In a home match against Wasatch, the Dinos defeated the Wasps 4-1. King once again had a successful set, winning 6-3, 7-6. Harber also defeated his opponent in the number two singles, 6-4, 7-5. At number three singles, Beau Christensen lost at 0-6, 2-6.
In doubles, Maynes and Sean Watkins won a tough three set match, 6-3, 4-6, 7-6. At number two doubles, the team of Andrew Christensen and Spillman won a three set match.
After a successful series against Wasatch, the Dinos then travelled to Moab. The Dino team once again finished strong, defeating Grand High 5-0.
The first region match of the season was held March 26 in Lehi. Although Lehi is new to region eight, and the teams quality of play was unknown, Lehi was quite strong. Despite this fact, the Dinos won this match 3-2.
Competition was quite close the whole day, with four of the five matches requiring three sets to decide the outcome. At number one singles, King improved his personal record to 4-1 with a three set victory over Daniel Faulk. Harber also improved his record to 4-1 with a 7-5 third set victory over Chris Egvert in number two singles.
At number three singles, Christensen won 6-2, 6-7, 6-4. Losing the second set in a tiebreaker is tough, but Christensen came back for a well deserved victory.
At number one doubles, Watkins and Maynes fell to Price and Lefler of Lehi. The number two doubles match up found Christensen and Spillman fell short of a win, 4-6, 6-3, 4-6.
The Dinos are progressing nicely. The next region match is scheduled for 3p.m. on April 2 at home against North Sanpete. The Dinos will then travel to Heber April 3 for a rematch against the Wasps.
