Edith Sallas


HELPER – Our loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Edith Guarienti Sallas, age 94, died March 27, 2002 at Rocky Mountain Care Center in West Valley.
She was born April 23, 1907 in Helper to Eugene and Marg-herita Pianasso Guarienti. Married John Sallas Aug. 11, 1929 in Price. He died March 27, 1972.
Active member St. Anthony Catholic Church, where she cleaned and took care of the church linens for over 30 years. She was a woman of the year at St. Anthony’s Parish in 1983 and past president of the Altar Society.
Longtime resident of Helper, where she was active in many community projects and served as a judge of elections for 12 years. Member of the Utah Federated Women’s club for 31 years, where she was president for two years and also held other offices.
Survived by son, J. Dennis Salamanikas, West Valley City; three grandchildren, Donna, Dennis E. Jr., Kirstie; great-grandchildren, Jason, Kayla, Crystal, Stephanie; special friend and caregiver, Betty Phelps. Preceded in death by parents; husband; eldest son, Christopher; sister; brother; daughter-in-law, Christina Fazzio Salamanikas.
Funeral Mass Monday, April 1, 10 a.m., St. Anthony Catholic Church in Helper. Family will be at the church Monday one hour prior to Mass. Committal service, Mountain View Cemetery, Helper, under the direction of Mitchell Funeral Home.



Thomas Sheffield


KANAB – Thomas W. Sheffield, age 91, passed away peacefully at his daughter’s home in Price on March 26, 2002.
He was born May 29, 1910 to Joseph Thomas Sheffield and Hannah Reynolds. Married Iola Jensen on July 6, 1933. She died Oct. 18, 1990. Genevieve Blackburn, December 1992.
Survived by wife, Genevieve; three daughters, Barbara (Ray) Kremers, Price; Renee (Chad) Cram, Kanab; Shirleen (David) JanKowski, Republica of Georgia; 10 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren, 24 great-great-grandchildren; three sisters, Hannah Tucker, Jane Jensen, Mary Jensen; two brothers, Bob Riley and George Riley.
Funeral service Saturday, March 30, 11 a.m., Price 11th LDS Ward, 300 West 500 South. Family will be at the church Saturday one hour prior to service. Interment, Kanab Cemetery, Monday, April 1, 11:30 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, family suggests contributions to the American Cancer Society.



Beverly Holbrook


BUTTE, Mont. – Lena Beverly Rasmussen Holbrook, 77, died at her home in Butte, Mont., March 20, 2002.
Beverly was born April 14, 1924 in Price, daughter of Law-rence Martin and Mary Jane Olsen Rasmussen. In 1947, she married Paul Holbrook in Butte, Mont. Paul died in 1998. Beverly and Paul were ardent big game hunters and fly fishermen. They loved the Big Sky Country and the Big Hole River was one of their favorites.
She attended Price schools. Blessed with a rich high soprano voice, she starred in dozens of musical productions in school, church and the community. Her exceptionally long hair fit in with operetta presentations and directors discouraged her from cutting it. She was a devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ if Latter-day Saints.
Beverly worked in local stores and at Safeway offices in Salt Lake City and Butte. For many years, Beverly volunteered at the Butte Hospital gift shop. She was an excellent seamstress and produced exquisite needlework. She loved Price history. Her grandparents, Peter I. and Sally Ann Olsen, were pioneers here.
Survivors are sisters, Marie (Jack) Cook, Salt Lake City; Jessie R. Holdaway, Price; sister-in-law, Norma Rasmussen, Salt Lake City; brother-in-law, Paul C. Naturale, Missoula, Mont.; nieces and nephews, Beau Naturale, Paulette Naturale, Missoula, Mont.; Richard E. Holdaway, Provo; Art Rasmussen, Price; Helen Platis, Topeka, Kan.; Ruth Buchanan, Farmington, N.M.; and Dorothy Hackwell, Turlock, Calif. Preceding her in death were her parents; brothers, Arthur P. Rasmussen and Morris E. Rasmussen; sister, Barbara N. Naturale; two nephews and one niece.
Funeral services were March 27 at Butte LDS Stake Chapel. Burial was in Missoula, Mont.
