Carbon High wrestler named to all academic all-state team.
Carbon High senior Keenan Atwood was recently named to the Utah High School Activities Association’s academic all-state team. The team is selected by the association based solely on a student/athletes grade point average. Atwood recently finished the wrestling season quite successful while maintaining a high GPA average.
College of Eastern Utah inducts two athletes to its hall of fame.
At a banquet held Saturday evening, the College of Eastern Utah inducted two former athletes into its hall of fame. Jack Woodward and Lane Martino were the recipients of the prestigious award. Woodward played at Carbon High where he was named to the all-state baseball team, along with being named outstanding all-around athlete in 1953, when he competed in football, basketball, and baseball for what was then Carbon College. He later lettered in football and baseball at Utah State. Martino, who competed in wrestling and football at Carbon High was an All-American football star at Southern Utah in 1979.
Scenic West Athletic Conference houses national champions.
The Dixie Rebels from St. George recently captured the National Junior College Athletic Association’s national championship. The Rebels men’s basketball team, who are the current Scenic West Athletic Conference champions, advanced to the final round of the championship after defeating the previously undefeated team Schoolcraft College from Livonia, Michigan. The Rebels then advanced to the finals where the team won its first national championship in 17 years, by defeating Coffeyville by the score of 82-81. The Rebels competed strong this season, finishing with a 16-2 record in the SWAC this season. The College of Eastern Utah also fell to the hands of the Rebels twice in the regular season this year.
