College Announces 2002 Inductees Into CEU Athletic Hall Of Fame

The College of Eastern Utah recognizes outstanding athletes from the Carbon County area at the school’s annual Founders Day dinner.
A committee of former athletes reviews the nominations and selects the individuals to be inducted into the CEU Athletic Hall of Fame.
The 2002 honorees include Lane Martino, an outstanding college football player in the 1970s, and Jack Woodward, an athlete in the 1950s whose career includes coaching and officiating.
Martino of Price lettered in football for three years while at Carbon High School. However, he was recruited by numerous colleges for his athletic ability in wrestling.
An offer to play football at South Utah State College caught Martino’s attention and the rest is written in the record books.
A defensive starter for four years at SUSC, Martino’s ability was recognized for three times as member of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference team and as a member of the all NAIA District Seven (four-state) team.
During his senior year, Martino was named to the 1979 Kodak College Division All American football team. He was noted for speed, accuracy and quickness, leading the SUSC Thunderbirds in quarterback sacks for three consecutive years.
Martino’s athletic success at the college level was recognized by interest expressed by several National Football League teams.
Woodward started his athletic career as a youngster growing up in Carbon County. He attended Carbon High School, where he excelled in baseball and was named to the All State team in 1951.
As Woodward moved on to Carbon College, he participated in football, basketball and baseball and was named outstanding all around athlete in 1953. He played All – ICAC baseball in 1952 and 1953.
Woodward then attended Utah State University, where he was a two-year letterman in football and baseball and was named All Skyline Conference in baseball in 1955.
After two years service to his country in United States Marine Corps, Woodward returned to Carbon High, where he coached basketball, baseball, football, golf tennis and, in the early years, played semi-professional baseball in the Utah Industrial League. He also was a sports official for football and basketball participating an as official in Utah High School State Basketball Tournaments for ten consecutive years.
Woodward coached Little League baseball for 15 years and coached All Star teams that qualified and played in the World Series for two years.
CEU will celebrate the 2002 Founders Day event on March 23.
The specially planned activities include the ground breaking for the G.J. Reeves main building at 4 p.m. in the east parking lot on 400 North in Price.
A reception for 2002 honorees is scheduled at 5 p.m. at the college center, followed by the dinner and awards ceremony at 6 p.m.
