The baseball season is officially underway for the College of Eastern Utah Golden Eagles. The team has competed in several games in the past month, but the Eagles will play for the first time at home on Friday.
The Eagles will open up the weekend with two games on Friday and finish the weekend off with two games on Saturday against Ricks College.
This years team is young, however talented. According to head coach Eric Madsen, “we have quite a few key players this year. We are solid at pitcher and have quite a few talented batters.”
Returning for the Eagles this year is pitcher Joldy Watts who is expected to be a main player for the Eagles offense. Also, pitcher Patrick Wells is expected to contribute quite well to the Eagles offense at the mound.
Also returning this year for CEU is Shawn Johnson and Kenny Jones, two infielders who have great talent at bat. Thus far, Johnson has done a nice job for the Eagles at bat. Currently, Johnson is ranked fourth in the Scenic West Athletic Conference in hits. With 18 games played, Johnson has hit 19 balls for an average of 1.06 hits per game.
The Eagles team is also ranked second in the SWAC in hits with 139 total so far this season. The team also has allowed the most hits in the SWAC with 138.
The Eagles are returning home after being on the road the past few weekends. Last weekend, the Eagles found themselves in Oregon taking on the Treasure Valley Chuckers. The Eagles split two games against the Chuckers. The opening game found the Eagles on top 10-3, however the Chuckers bounced back to defeat the Eagles 3-2 on March 2.
The Eagles current record is 5-13 overall. Although the teams record is currently at an average of 27 percent, the team is still working on improvements. With the talent the team has, success is guaranteed. Hopefully, the return home will allow the Eagles to start the climb up the latter in the SWAC standings.
The team will hit the field on Friday at 1 p.m and Saturday at noon and play back to back games both days. The team field is located next the the county possee grounds and the public is encouraged to attend and cheer the Eagles on as they open up the season at home.
