As the season draws to a close, the College of Eastern Utah men’s basketball team hit the road. Friday the Eagles began the two game weekend in Oregon, then finished the weekend off in Idaho on Saturday. The Eagles found themselves at both ends of the score board this past weekend with one loss and one win.
The two game road trip started off on the right track for the Eagles with the team defeating the Treasure Valley Chuckers 88-67. The victory was a complete team effort.
Leading the Eagles in scoring was Matt Thomas, a first year guard for the Eagles. Thomas completed the game with 15 points. To go along with the points, Thomas also dished out six assists, blocked one shot, posted three rebounds, and completed 2-3 three point shots.
Antoine Reynolds and Nick Whiting followed Thomas in scoring with 11 points each. Whiting also posted 10 rebounds, while Reynolds completed eight against the Chuckers.
Valentino Richardson and Renaldo Knowles each scored 10 points in the Eagles victory rally against the struggling Treasure Valley team.
Although the Eagles did not have a great performance from the free throw line, with only a 59 percent average, this factor did not come into play against the Chuckers. The following night however would find the Eagles working on improving this average from the line.
Saturday evening, the Eagles faced off against Southern Idaho. Although the Eagles did improve their free throw average to 76 percent, the team record failed to improve with Southern Idaho defeating the Eagles 102-68.
The Eagles trailed in scoring throughout the game in Idaho. The half found the Eagles down 39-55. These numbers however did not discourage the Eagles who fought a tough fight.
Leading the Eagles in scoring Saturday evening was Skyler Wilson who completed 15 points. Wilson, who is currently ranked fifth in the Scenic West Athletic Conference in three point field goals made, struggled against the Idaho team. Wilson only completed 2-8 from the long distance line against the Southern Idaho Golden Eagles.
Wilson is also currently ranked fourth in the SWAC in free throw percentage, with an average of 83 percent. Wilson completed 7-8 from the free throw line against Southern Idaho.
Thomas and Nick Whiting followed Wilson in scoring with 11 points each. Patrick Stinnett scored six points while contributing to CEU’s defensive efforts with four steals.
The two game split brings the Eagles current record to 8-9 in SWAC games played and 18-11 overall for the season. The Eagles look forward to improving these record this week against Colorado Northwestern Community College in Rangely on Friday. This will be the last season game for the Eagles who intend to capitalize on the Spartans 1-15 SWAC record.
