This past weekend was a tough one for the College of Eastern Utah Lady Eagles basketball team to swallow. The troubles started early on for the Eagles as the team hosted Utah Valley State College on Thursday. The trouble only worsened by Saturday as the team traveled to Salt Lake Community College to take on the Bruins.
The Eagles suffered major losses at the hands of both opponents, and dropping the team to 3-10 in Scenic West Athletic Conference games, and 8-17 overall for the season.
The Eagles started out the two game weekend at home against the Wolverines of UVSC. The game found the Eagles struggling to complete shots and pull down rebounds. These missing factors lead the Eagles 84-53 loss against the Wolverines.
CEU shot only 32 percent from the field compared to the Wolverines 46 percent field goal average for the game. McKell Warburton lead the Eagles in scoring with 11 points. Warburton also lead the team in three point shooting with 3-9 shots from the long distance line.
Following in scoring was Julianne Orgill and Alex Cobb who both scored seven points against the Wolverines.
The Eagles hoped to turn their luck around Saturday as they traveled north to take on the Bruins of Salt Lake. This goal was diminished however, after the team failed to complete field goals.
According to CEU head coach Dave Paur, “when they don’t shoot well, it seems that the rest of the game goes too. They do not play well offensively or defensively when the shots don’t fall.”
The Eagles failed to play with much intensity which lead the 86-43 loss against the Bruins. This loss, along with the loss against the Wolverines disappoints coach Paur. “There is no excuse to not play defense. We had came about quite well against North Idaho and Treasure Valley, but this weekend we took two giant steps back. The girls need to find their effort. They are not playing with intensity or urgency. They stopped playing when Salt Lake came at them, and they can’t do that. There is still five games left in the regular season, and they are playing as if the season is already over. The effort must be found.”
The only real effort that the Eagles showed against the Bruins came from Dawnielle Boudreaux who lead the Eagles in scoring with nine points and seven rebounds. Cobb also assisted in scoring with seven points, while dishing out one assist, stealing three balls, and pulling down on rebound.
The team struggled in shooting with an average of only 28 percent from the field, and 15 percent from the three point line.
Shooting however was not the only problem the Eagles faced. Rebounding was also a problem for the Eagles as they struggled to only pull down 33 rebounds compared to the Bruins 57 rebounds.
The ladies will be back in action this weekend at home as they host Snow College Friday night, and Dixie College Saturday night at the BDAC. The team will work heavily on defense this week as they prepare for this weekends match-ups.
