The Carbon Dinos girls team may seem to be the toast of the town this basketballs season, but the claim for the county may be more up in the air.
While the Lady Vikings from East Carbon are not ranked in the top five in the state, they are quietly building toward the state playoffs by whipping most of their opponents in the 1A ranks. Right now the team stands 6-2, with their latest victim of the basketball wars being the Tintic Miners.
The game last Thursday displayed the balance the East Carbon team has and it was one of their most lop sided victories this year as the tromped the kids from Eureka 62-35.
It was a rout from the beginning, although the Miners did a bit of a reversal in the third quarter.
East Carbon jumped off to a 17-6 lead at the end of the first quarter led by the shooting of Alaena Preston who had 20 in the game.
The second quarter was even a bigger blowout as the team scored 21 points and held the Lady Miners to only five for the period. The lopsided halftime score was 38-11, and it looked like the Lady Vikes very well could break the 80 or even 90 point mark in the game.
But in the third quarter East Carbon cooled off considerably, only being able to score 8 points in the period. The Miners did a little better than they had before the halfway mark by putting in 13.
In the final period East Carbon came back and won the quarter, but did not measure up to their first or second quarter stats scoring only 16 points. Tintic scored 11 in the third.
East Carbon was able to play nine players in the game and three of them went to double figures. Along with Preston’s 20, Nicole Johnson scored 10 and so did Chelsey Timothy.
The Lady Vikings are in second place in Region 18 while West Desert leads the league with a perfect 8-0 record. Dugway is one game behind at 5-3.
This week is a big week for the Lady Vikings as they have two home games. The first is on Tuesday night against Meridian at 6 p.m.
Then on Thursday night they play Wasatch Academy at 6 p.m. in the Viking gym.
