The College of Eastern Utah ladies basketball team traveled south this past weekend to compete against Dixie College in St. George and Snow College in Ephraim. The ladies started the trip on a five game losing streak, and the two day road trip did not get much better.
The Eagles opened up the weekend against the Dixie Rebels. The Eagles struggled for field goals, shooting only 32 percent and completing only 26-79 shots made. The Eagles trouble with scoring added up to the 84-66 loss against the Rebels.
Although the Eagles struggled to sink many shots, the team did out rebound the Rebels 50-44. Leading the way in rebounding for the Eagles was Leslie Lines who pulled down eight, while Kasey Mills and Dawnielle Boudreaux each completed six boards. Unfortunately, the rebounds did not turn into many points for the Eagles.
Leading scorer for the Eagles was Mills who finished the game with 15 points. Mills also completed 2-4 three point shots, dished out eight assists, and swiped four balls from the Rebels. Mills is also currently ranked in tenth place in steals in the Scenic West Athletic Conference standings.
Megan Valgardson followed in scoring with 10 points, while completing one steal and pulling down five rebounds. Valgardson, who is no stranger to rebounding, is currently ranked fifth in the SWAC in this category.
After the struggle in St. George, the Eagles boarded the bus and headed to Ephraim where the ladies hoped to turn their luck around against the Snow College Badgers. Unfortunately for the Eagles, the dark rain cloud that has followed the team around the past few weeks, did not shake off before the team hit the court at Snow College.
CEU’s scoring problems plagued the team once again with the Eagles shooting only 30 percent from the field with only 20 shots completed out of 66 taken.
The Eagles rally for rebounds in St. George also came to an end in Ephraim as the ladies only posted 26 total rebounds compared to the Badgers 43 posted.
Scoring and rebounding trouble once again lead to the Eagles defeat, by the score of 79-56. The loss drops the Eagles to 6-13 overall this season, and 1-6 against SWAC teams.
McKell Warburton lead the Eagles in scoring with 12 points, six of these points came from three point field goals. Following in points was Julianne Orgill with 11 and Mills with 10 points.
After the second loss of the weekend, the ladies boarded the bus for the long trip home. The troubles that have plagued the team lately seem to persist, with Constance Rasmussen breaking her jaw. It looks as if the CEU guard will be out for the remainder of the season, along with Crystal Grady who has left the team for academic reasons.
The lady Eagles anticipate turning their losing streak around as quickly as possible. The first step in doing so will be against the College of Southern Idaho on Friday, and Treasure Valley on Saturday, as the team returns home to host the back to back games.
Practice this week will consist of shooting and rebounding drills along with a confidence boost, something that the team has been lacking in the last few weeks. If these three factors fall into place this weekend, the Eagles will be a tough team to beat at the BDAC.
