When the Mustangs of Dugway come to town, one can expect anything. Rich in basketball tradition, this high school has often spoiled other schools home stand.
But last Thursday night the only thing that was spoiled was the west desert kids plans as the Lady Vikings of East Carbon beat them at their own game 57-47.
Led by Alaena Preston with 19 points, the East Carbon girls took out the Lady Mustangs with their foul shooting making 15 of 25 from the line as the Dugway kids were only able to convert four of eight from the charity stripe.
The first period was tight as the lead seesawed back and forth. By the end of the quarter Dugway had scrambled to a one point lead 14-13.
The second period was the same as the score remained basically stalemated. Both teams looked a little rusty in the quarter, but both played good defense too as the teams went into the locker room with each scoring 10 in the quarter.
East Carbon was behind at the half, but they came out determined to do something with one of the leading scorers in the state Natasha Pagan, who had 25 in the game, but scored less in the second half, straddled with fouls that eventually put her out of action in the fourth quarter.
In the third period East Carbon was able to gain the edge by barely out pacing the Lady Mustangs 14-12.
It was in the fourth period when Dugways fouls started to catch up with them that the Lady Vikes started to pull away. Along with Pagan, Whitney Dunyon and Kerri Phillips, both senior starters went out of the game after trying to hack and tear their way to victory. From then on it was all East Carbons game. The girls from the Sunnyside school put up 20 points while holding the opposition to 11 points in the fourth period.
East Carbon now stands at 4-2 in Region 18 and in third place in the league standings, just behind Dugway.
The team now plays at Wendover on Tuesday night, a team that was short handed when they beat up on them earlier in the season.
