Carbon County Recreation is offering a variety of adventure recreation programs to the public beginning after the holiday season. These programs include; an avalanche awareness workshop, a river permit party, beginning snowshoeing, and the agency’s newest program, beginning kayaking.
Beginning kayaking is the agency’s newest program and everyone at Carbon Rec is excited about the opportunity to bring something like this into the community of Carbon County.
The program will consist of one classroom session, and four group pool sessions. The classroom session will be held on Jan.10, at 5 pm. in the Price Community Center. The group sessions will begin on Jan. 14, at 5pm at the Desert Wave Pool. Each class session will last for one hour.
This program was made possible with the cooperation of the recreation office and the staff of the Desert Wave Pool. Executive Director of Recreation Steve Christensen was able to get 10 kayaks donated from various individuals and agencies from all around the country. Christensen is still working to get several more kayaks donated. If this happens Carbon Rec will be able to rent these items on a regular basis at a reasonable rate.
The registration fee includes admission to the pool, use of a kayak and all of the necessary equipment.
People who are interested in this class should register early, because the class is limited to six people.
Other classes will be available throughout the winter months and also in the early spring. The dates for these other classes have not yet been released. Anyone interested from age 10 and up should register at the Carbon County Recreation office located at 90 North 100 East in the Price Community Center.
A program that everyone should take advantage of is beginning snowshoeing. This program will take place on Jan.19. The program is free. You must have your own equipment and appropriate clothing. If you need a ride Carbon Rec offers a shuttle. Equipment is also available to rent.
What do you need to know about avalanches? Well come to the free workshop on Jan. 25 and 26 and find out. This program is presented in conjunction with the U.S. Forest Service and the Utah Avalanche Center.
This workshop will consist of an evening class on Jan. 25, beginning at 7 p.m. in the Price Community Center and an outing on Jan. 26 in Huntington Canyon. Participants must provide their own transportation.
Carbon County Recreation is also offering a river permit party. This informational meeting will teach you everything that you would ever want to know about the river permitting process. This meeting will be held on Jan. 7 from 5 to 7 pm in the Price Community Center. River videos will also be shown at this meeting.
