WEST JORDAN – On August 2, 2001 we lost the light of our lives, Elizabeth Anne Oliphant Liebengood.
She was born Aug. 7, 1933 in Council Bluffs, Iowa, a daughter of Russell W. and Helen Barbara Brown Oliphant. Married Mel Liebengood on July 7, 1980 in Price.
Employed by Government Civil Services for 35 years. Retired from the Bureau of Land Management in Price in 1986. Active member of St. Matthews Lutheran Church, where she served as treasurer and secretary. Her love and commitment to her church will be sorely missed. Active member of WELCA.
Survived by mother, Helen Oliphant; beloved husband, Mel; daughter, Jill Hanson; grandsons, David and Matthew; niece and nephews, Mollie, Danny, Pat (Judy), Michael (Jane) Malone; three great-nephews, Tyler, Tyson and Josh. Extended family includes Mel’s family, two sons, one daughter, five grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; sister, Sandy; favorite brother-in-law, Bernie (Joyce) Malone; and best friends, Tommy and Joyce Hass. Preceded in death by loving father, Russell; soul mate and sister, Georgia; and special nephew, Jason.
The world was a better place with Liz in it, and just knowing her made us all better people For those of us left behind, life will never be the same and for that reason she will be kept closely in our hearts. So we can say “good-bye” to our dear and beloved Lizzie: until we see you again, go in peace.
Memorial services will be Saturday, Aug. 11, 11 a.m., at St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church, 2700 West 5200 South. Friends are welcome to come and celebrate our “little Democrat’s” life. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church Building Fund, under the direction of McDougal Funeral Home.


Katherine Eaquinta


HELPER – Katherine Marie Eaquinta, age 93, passed away Aug. 4, 2001 in Price.
She was born May 4, 1908 to Giavonni and Saveria Gallo Eaquinta on Eaquinta Flats, in Helper.
Katherine worked at the La Salle Hotel and restaurant, the family owned business built by her father in the early 1900’s. She also retired from Helper Junior High School as a cook after 25 years. Katherine loved and dedicated her life to her sisters, brothers, nieces and nephews and enjoyed taking care of them. She loved to travel and often would take her nieces and nephews with her on trips. She loved all sports, and was one of the first fans when little league started to go around with the bucket for donations during the game to help benefit the little league. Everyone should remember Katherine’s pet chimpanzee whose name was “Chip” that entertained everyone in Helper. Katherine had a great love and compassion for all animals. Member of the Roman Catholic Church. Member of the Moose Club, 8&40 Club, and the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary in Helper.
Survived by sisters, Mary and Carinda Eaquinta, Helper; sisters-in-law; cousins; many nieces, nephews numerous special friends and close acquaintances. She was preceded in death by parents; baby sister; brothers, Sam, Sherman Oaks, Calif; Joe, Las Vegas, Nev.; Louie, San Jose, Calif.; James, Fairfield, Calif.; Frank and Carl, both of Helper; and sister, Rose Eaquinta Spatafore, Spring Glen.
Funeral Mass Thursday, Aug. 9, 10 a.m., St. Anthony Catholic Church. Vigil service Thursday, 9:30 a.m., at the church in Helper. Friends are welcome at Mitchell Funeral Home daily from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Committal service, Price City Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family request that donations be made to either St. Anthony Catholic Church in Helper or the Helper Fire and Rescue Dept.


Ray Lopez


SUNNYSIDE – Our beloved brother, father and dear friend, Raymond Christopher Lopez, age 41, passed away August 2, 2001 in Price.
He was born Jan. 27, 1960 in East Carbon, to Cato G. and Mary Archuleta Lopez.
Ray was a longtime resident of Sunnyside and he loved to play the piano and the guitar. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping and basketball. Ray will be dearly missed by his family and a community of friends.
Survived by two sons and two daughters, Jessie Lopez, Price; Jennifer Potter, Grand Junction, Colo.; Chris Lopez, Cedar City; Sophia McKendrick, Price; companion, Lisa McKendrick, Price; two sisters and one brother, Lydia and Joe Soto, East Carbon; Cathy and Glen Gibson, Sunnyside; and Frank Lopez, Albuquerque, N.M. Ray was preceded in death by parents; brothers, Anthony and Bernie.
Funeral service Tuesday, Aug. 7, 11 a.m., Mitchell Funeral Home. Interment, Price City Cemetery.


Connie Echols


WHITEFISH, Mont. – Connie Lee Vestal Echols was recently killed in an automobile accident.
Connie was born April 3, 1944 in Standardville to Leonard Vestal and Twila (Mickie) Hayes. She married Charles E. Echols.
She is survived by her husband, Charles, and her daughter, Kara (Robbi) James. Also survived by her mom, Twila (Mickie) Hartzell; stepfather, John E. Hartzell; brother and sisters, Larry (Sharron) Vestal, Louise (Marty) Wilkinson, John (Elena) Hartzel, Janet (David) Meye and Jamie E. Hartzell; many nieces and nephews; and a special great-niece, Katy Lynn Martak. Preceded in death by her father, sister and brother.
Funeral services were July 24, 2001 at Whitefish, Mont. Interment, Kalispell, Montana.
