Even in the best weather conditions, the 120 mile section of US-6 between Spanish Fork and I-70 near Green River can be dangerous. A high volume of trucks and automobiles travels that stretch at interstate speeds along sharp curves and through narrow canyons. According to the National Highway Safety Administration, there were 519 fatal and serious injury crashes from 1996 through 2008, leading the stretch to be considered one of the deadliest in the United States.
From the east coast to its terminus in Bishop, California, US-6 is named the Grand Army of the Republic Highway in honor of the Union Army of the Civil War era. In Utah, there is an advisory sign near the Colorado border and another near the Nevada border naming the road as such.
In 2009, the Utah State Legislature renamed the section of the highway between Interstates 15 and 70 the Mike Dmitrich Highway, in honor of the retired Price Legislator. State Sen. David Hinkins, R-Orangeville, who sponsored the bill, said Dmitrich deserved the honor because of his 40 years of public service to the state, and his work to improve the highway. The legislature did not allocate any money for new signs.
