With its 20th win of the season secured in the final regular season game, the Carbon High School girls’ basketball team officially became back-to-back Region 12 Champions, finishing the season with a 7-1 conference record, and sending the Dinos to the 3A State Tournament for the second year in a row.
“That was one of our goals that we reached,” said head coach Ted Bianco. “That’s our goal every year, so I mean it was something that we wanted to achieve and we did so I feel very proud for them.”
The Dinos picked up their seventh Region 12 win and 20th overall win over Juab High School on Thursday, defeating the Wasps by a commanding 50-33. While the Dinos continually increased their lead throughout the game, their most stellar performance came in the final quarter, during which they held the Wasps scoreless for over half of the period.
Junior Lindsey Blanc led the team on offense with 20 points, going 7-12 from the field with one three-pointer and 5-6 from the free throw line. Senior Sara Morley tallied nine rebounds in the game, one offensive and eight defensive.
The Dinos were led throughout the season by their five seniors: Morgan Hillam, Jordan Scoggins, Desi Lantz, Sara Morley and Bella Barney.
“Seniors ever year mean so much because they put so much time and effort,” said Bianco. “It’s always hard to say goodbye. We’ve got a great group of seniors again this year so I’m extremely proud of these kids, all of them.”
Carbon will play host to Bear River High School on Friday for the first round of the 3A State Tournament. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
“I’ll get some film on them and we’ll decide what we have to do, get a game plan put together,” said Bianco.
