The Carbon High School boys’ basketball team hosted a home game against rival Emery High School on Monday, and although the Dinos commanded the first half of play, they could not come away with the home win. The Dinos fell to the Spartans 57-54, after leading going into the last period.
The Dinos led throughout the first few minutes of the final period, before Emery was able to tie the game at 47 with just over five minutes left in the game. Carbon was able to take a five-point lead with under four minutes remaining, but Emery went on a six-point run to take a one point lead with 1:30 remaining.
After a few timeouts taken by both sides and free throws taken by the Spartans, the Dinos were down by three with only 30 seconds remaining. With time for only one shot, the Dinos took it, but missed the three-point attempt to send Emery home with the victory.
The Dinos got out to a quick lead over the Spartans to start the game, scoring 10 points while holding the Spartans to a mere five of their own. The second period proved a bit tougher for the Dinos and saw the game tied at both 17 and 21 before the Dinos went into halftime with a three-point 27-24 lead.
After halftime, Emery continued the push they had started before the break and even took a one point lead early in the third period. However, Carbon was able to squeak back by and go into the final period of the game with a one-point lead, thanks in large part to key three-point baskets from senior Cole Fossat.
The Dinos are now 4-5 on the season before beginning region play. They will play in the Steve Hodson Cancer Classic Monday through Wednesday before taking a week vacation. They will pick up play again on Jan. 6 with a home game against South Sevier at 7 p.m. The Dinos first Region 12 game is coming up quickly, which will be a home game against Canyon View High School on Jan. 12 at 7 p.m.
