The USU Eastern men’s basketball team is off to a hot start in the 2015 season, with two dominating wins over Taylormade this weekend. The Golden Eagles won 136-60 on Friday night and 139-44 on Saturday night.
The Golden Eagles got off to a slow start on Friday night, although they never trailed Taylormade. About seven minutes into the first half, head coach Adjaima Becheli pulled his starting five and replaced them with the men on the bench.
“I think we started not good. We just went through the motions at first, and then when I took the five starters out then the kids come from the bench then they picked up and played with hustle,” said Becheli.
This seemed to get the Golden Eagles’ heads in the game, as they finished the first half leading 68-31. After the break, the Golden Eagles went on an absolute tear, scoring 22 points before Taylormade finally answered back with two free throws. However, USUE kept piling on the points, including dunks and three-pointers.
“I think it’s very good, the kids have fun and run and do some dunks and they had fun and I think when you have fun and play hard it makes you come back and practice better and say ‘Hey let’s have fun again,’” said Becheli.
For USUE, Hamdi Karoui tallied 17 points with eight field goals and one three-pointer, Lamont Walker tallied 21 points with nine field goals and two three-pointers along with eight rebounds, and Justin Pollman tallied 22 points with eight field goals and two three-pointers along with eight rebounds.
The Golden Eagles went on to defeat Taylormade again on Saturday 139-44. For USUE, Tevin Farris tallied 22 points with 11 field goals along with 12 rebounds and Solomon Rolls-Tyson tallied 26 points with nine field goals and one three-pointer along with 16 rebounds.
USUE will head to the Arizona Western Desert Classic this weekend, before returning home to face Impact Academy on Nov. 18 at 3 p.m.
