Letter to the Editor: The good people of Carbon County

By Sun Advocate

Editor:
We just recently returned from a trip to Carbon County area to attend a classic car rally in East Carbon. Unfortunately, just two miles from your beautiful park our 1931 Model A decided to loose the P gear drive in the transmission.
We were able to make it to the park in low gear, creeping along as in 1931, at a snails pace of 15 miles per hour. We tried to find someone who knew a local auto repair to call but nobody seemed to be able to help us. We ended up at the Sinclair station in East Carbon where the station attendant was very empathetic with cold sodas and a local phone book.
We thought calling a tow truck on a late Saturday afternoon would be impossible but Bob Farrell of Helper Auto answered his cell phone immediately and even called back when we kept losing connection. We explained our predicament and he came all the way from Helper to “float” the little Model A up onto his wrecker. Bob was very considerate not to scratch the frame and padded everywhere to protect the little truck.
He told us of a gentleman who would be willing to look at the transmission this evening. We couldn’t believe it. Someone that surely was enjoying his weekend would not want to leave his family and go to work at 6 p.m. Saturday night. But we were very wrong.
This kind man was Joe Piccolo, owner of Supreme Muffler and Brake in Price. From the moment Bob unloaded the truck we were treated like we had known Joe for years and felt he had a genuine concern for our situation. He found what gear needed to be replaced, found a new drive gear (miracle) and had us on the road in an hour. Joe even helped us find a place to eat and then gave us directions to get back on the highway towards Moab. We really thought we would be in a hotel until Monday. Our trip through Moab and later on down towards Durango, Colo. went with out a hick-up.
What great people there are in Carbon County. You all are very kind and if that was any reflection of the people who live there, I’m coming back! We hope to see everybody at the classic car rally in August and perhaps make some more friends.
