The Lady Dinos took a pre-season road swing down south and began the road trip with a tough game against 4A Pineview. Pine View came out on top 11-2.
Then they headed to St George for a tournament and the Dinos jumped right back into the winning column with shutouts on Friday against Ogden 13-0 and Beaver 6-0. On Saturday, the team scored an 11-2 win against Rowland Hall and a 6-2 win against Millard. In the championship game, Emery was the one with the shutout and the Dinos went down 14-0.
On Thursday night Pineview, was a really close game until the fifthinning. Behind, 4 -2, a controversial call was made against the Dinos after two outs.
“I argued the call and then we let it get to us and lost our focus.” explained Coach Pinedo. “We lost 11-2. It must have been a good wake up call because we played some great softball the next two days.”
Carbon played Ogden on Friday with Paige Pinedo pitching her second shutout of the year. She struck out five and gave up just two hits. Every starter had at least one hit as the Dinos collected 18 hits in the game.
The second game that day was even better. It came against a very good team from Beaver.
Once again they came away with a shutout as Pinedo pitched a great game and Whitney Williams had an outstanding defensive game. Williams picked off two girls at third base, caught a girl stealing second base, and threw two runners out at first as they tried to bunt their way on to first base. On Saturday Carbon took on a team from Rowland Hall and we beat them 11-2.Brittney Gustas pitched the entire game Coach Pinedo commented that she did a great job. Thedefense played well and the offense got the hits needed to get the job done.
The second game that day was against Millard. Paige Pinedo was the winning pitcher and Coach Pinedo credited another great team effort.
In the final game Carbon had to play Emery and got beat pretty bad.
“We had five of our starters leave to come back to Price for a dance and we had to play a lot of younger girls. Emery is a very good team and even with everyone of our starters at the game we wouldhave to play a great game to beat them,” Coach Pinedo summed up. “They played well and we didn’t. We lost 14-0. All in all I think we had a very good tournament. We learned a lot about ourselves and I think we have a very good team this year.
“We are currently 6-2 with three shutouts and we still don’t haveWhitney Oliver playing. She will help make us even better. Our defense has improved tremendously and we feel like that is a big key for us.”
The Lady Dinos play Union at the Carbon High softball field next Tuesday, March 25 with first pitch crossing the plate at 3 p.m. The Park City game, scheduled as an away game, may get moved to Price if their field isn’t ready to play on.
