Coach Moynier goes to the mound to settle his team down during a nightmare inning against Union last tuesday. |
It was a bad week last week for the Carbon Dinos baseball squad. First off on Tuesday they got pummeled by Union 15-5 in a non-region game. Then they ended the week with an 11-6 region loss to Juan Diego. This week didn’t get any better as the Dinos dropped two to Emery. They got pounded 10-0 in the first and let the second one slip by 5-2.
Last Tuesday things didn’t look bad for the Dinos when they jumped out to a one run lead in the first inning against Union. But in the second inning, the team just could not make an out, even when the ball came right to them. The nightmare inning ended after Union put up eight and starter Dylan Olsen was chased off the mound.
The third inning was not much better as Carbon allowed five more Cougars to cross the plate. The team finally settled down and began to chip away at the insurmountable lead to keep themselves from ending the game early. But in the end, the team knew it had to shake it off and be ready to play on Friday. Brandon Branch hit a solo shot for the Dinos in the loss. The offense had eight hits for five runs. The team also committed a whooping nine errors in the game.
The team headed to Juan Diego to resume region play. Beau Rich started things off on a good note for Carbon with a double. The Dinos put two on the board. They added a pair in the fourth to take a 4-0 lead. But the Juan Diego got its bats going and went up by one with a five run inning.
The Dinos tied it up in the fifth, but the Soaring Eagles had another big inning and answered with another four runs. The Carbon offense could just not put together a string of hits to get some scoring going and ended up losing the region contest.
Needing to get back on track, Carbon headed south to rival Emery for a pair. Miserable weather greeted the Dinos and the game they played reflected the sour conditions they played in.
“They got a few runs each inning and we got a few errors each inning,” was the way Coach Moynier chose to sum up the game. “At the beginning of the season I though it would be our pitching that would be suspect, but they are doing a good job and it is the fielding behind them that is not.
Greg Barker pitched the first game against Emery and TJ Cartwright came on in relief. Coach Moynier though they both pitched well in the face of the conditions and lack of support behind them.
The Dinos even had the lead for a while in the second game. But as Moynier put it, “Every time we make a mistake it costs us and it was mistakes again that cost us the lead late in the game.”
The Dinos led the game 2-1 until the fifth when Emery posted a pair to take the lead and the win.
Carbon sits with a 2-4 region record. “We need to beat some one ,” said Moynier, but we have to face Juan Diego at home next week, it doesn’t look good.” He does admit that inexperience is the main problem this year. And he knows that the only way the team will get better is to take its knocks and learn.
The Dinos will have a home doubleheader next Tuesday against Juan Diego with first pitch at 2:30 p.m.
